Happy StarcraftingYou can read more about the amazing artwork used above at the bottom of the post!

Happy Starcrafing! 😀 I just wanted to say a few things here before getting to the news. You will realise, when you head into this rather lengthy post, that I have added a smalls section to the start of both the Tournament & Event News and Community News sections. This little summary of news posts makes it a little easier to set these posts up. I throw all the news in there that I feel is not really worth actually elaborating on in the post, while still keeping it in there for all those die-hards out there. Sooo be sure to skim over those and make sure you aren’t missing something you don’t want to miss! Otherwise, enjoy the news and thanks for all the support!

Starcraft II Patch 1.2

Starcraft II Patch 1.2 – Release Date?

To start this off I just wanted to give everyone a heads up, Blizzard confirmed that they’ve been doing more fixes and testing on an internal PTR and that Starcraft II Patch 1.2 is expected to come hit the live servers next week, if all goes well. That is really great news, so, if you want to prepare for the changes that are coming I suggest you give the latest version of the PTR patch notes a quick read, you can find them below, along with the official announcement of the patches release. Enjoy!

GSL 2011

GSL – Code-S / Code-A

The GSL play-days are flying by fast and we are being treated with more and more extremely high quality play. There really have been some amazing games, but, there have also been a few upsets. So let’s have a look how all our favourite Code-S and Code-A players are doing. There is an amazing thread up on the TeamLiquid forums that was put together by a user named motbob and well, look no further for your GSL results.

In the Code-A big names such as IMJunwi, aLivefOu, oGsTOP, sCfOu, Loner and ST.July. have made it through to the next round. Well known players that failed to advance in the Code-A include TankboyPrime.WE, ST.Ace and LiquidRet.

Players that have advanced to the next round in Code-S are IMNesTea, TheBestfOu, IMMvp, oGsZenio, SlayerS_BoxeR, oGsHyperdub, choyafOu,  TSL.sSKS, NSP.Genius, ST.RainbOw, oGsMC and finally oGsNaDa.The Code-S has not been without upset, though. The following big names failed to progress – Polt & MakaPrime, The Fruitdealer, who lost to IMMvp and oGsZenio, HongUnPrime, oGsTheWind, KyrixZenith, TSL_Rain, LeenockfOu, sanZenith and oGsInca.

There are more matches to be played tomorrow, so as I mentioned, if you check the post linked below out you will get a much clearer picture of what’s going on right now. It really is well put together and gives all the right information. Keep checking back here for more GSL updates, though.

GSL Official Map Change Coming Soon

In some more GSL related news, GSL Code-S pro-gamer NSPGenius posted a thread on PlayXP about an upcoming, and official, GSL map change. According to NSPGenius, the four bad maps that are set to be pulled out from GSL maplist are Steppes of War, Delta Quadrant, Blistering Sands and one last unknown one. The maps set to replace those maps are the following: Aiur Garden, Tal’Darim Altar, Biohazard, Crossfire and Terminus Re. According to a reply from GSL staff it seems like the Gisado Star-Challenge is now testing the new maps for next GSL season. I guess we will just have to wait and see if these new ones will actually get used, or if Blizzard will step in and step up with their maps. Who knows, see images of the new maps below along with the full quotes, enjoy!

GOMtv Send Your Favourite Player To Korea

GOMtv has sent out a request to the community seeking their opinions on which foreigners to invite to participate in the next season of the GSL, starting in February. They let us know, in the same quote, that there will be at least four spots to fill. This means that players who cannot play in the preliminaries or were not able to win a spot in the qualification has still the chance to play in the Global StarCraft 2 League’s main event. So if you are keen to help out or just see what others are saying you can head on over to the GOMtv support forums to check it out.

Machinima Realm Starcraft II Invitational

Machinima Realm has announced their first venture into the world of Starcraft, an invitational including the teams Liquid, ROOT, EG, mousesports and Prime, who all will be competing for the prize pool of $2,500! The tournament is going to be a best of 7 clan war containing both 1v1’s and 2v2’s. Dates are apparently not finalized yet and the matches will, as far as I can tell, be played when the players have the time for them. (That sounds a little loose?) Lucky for us, though, the replays will be cast by none other than Crota, from the BlizShouter channel. eG Recruit DeMusliM & Promises GSL Action

One of the bigger pieces of player and clan news of the past week is that eG bought DeMusliM out of his running contract with mTw in order to add him to their already impressive Starcraft II line-up. eG already currently homes several stars of the RTS scene such as Starcraft II Badboy IdrA, Warcraft III legend Grubby and many others. DeMusliM released an official statement about the transfer that basically just said he was thrilled to be part of eG and that he was glad that the guys from mTw took it so well and supported him throughout. You can read the full details of the transfer below along with DeMusliM’s full statement.

Right after this it was announced that eG have plans to set up a house in South Korea where their players would be able to prepare for and compete in competitions such as the Global Starcraft 2 League and the Global Starcraft 2 Team League. Aditionally, it was revealed that they would in fact be sending Benjamin “Demuslim” Baker to South Korea to participate in the future qualification rounds of the GSL. These articles and quotes are definitely worth a read, they even compare Desmuslim’s marketability to another famous European player’s, Grubby. Read all of that below, enjoy!

Starcraft II In Western eSports: Is A Korean Model Needed?

FNATIC recently published an article by Marc ‘frequency’ Onofrio where he argues that there is no need for StarCraft II to be televised in the West for it to gain mainstream popularity and success. He claims that online streaming is a far more efficient and logical way to push the game in the right direction. He says he’d love to hear your opinions on the topic, and any general feedback/questions. It is an interesting concept and, well, one that is actually quite often mentioned and talked about. Obviously streaming and online is the way forward, the whole world can be involved in absolutely any event from absolutely anywhere. But, it’s just not the same as a live event, is it? Ah well, if you are interested, check that out below, definitely worth a read!

ESL TV: RotterdaM University

The chief of Intel Extreme Masters, Michal ‘Carmac’ Blicharz, is set to be featured in a new show on ESL TV where he will go from a total noob to a Diamond player. How, you ask? Well this will be done with the help of  Kevin ‘RotterdaM’ van der Kooi. The show will be called RotterdaM University and will follow the process of the former WarCraft III  legend RotterdaM teaching Carmac every little thing he needs to know about StarCraft II. Carmac is a well-known eSports journalist, having worked for sites as SK-Gaming and Global Gaming League, but, one thing is certain, he sucks at Starcraft II. So you can watch the incredibly funny trailer for the show above and read more about it in the links below. The first episode is set to air sometime in the month of January.

You can also read below about a few rumors that are going around which I, for the record, don’t believe. A fan thinks that GOMTV is supporting BoxeR by placing him, mostly at least, against terran players. Now, this fan thinks that, and may or may not be right, that BoxeR’s strongest matchup is in fact TvT. He points out that he is not hating or dissing, he just finds it a little funny.

One thing that is funny is that GOMtv has actually directly responded to this fans doubts and provided us all with an explanation, and some peace of mind. They say that they put top 4 players from last season in each bracket, then tried to split each race evenly into each bracket. And if they follow this method strictly all the brackets would look the same or be balanced at least. So right now apparently each bracket has 6~8 zergs, 5~7 terrans and 3 protoss. Interesting. Protoss Are Weak

Protoss Are Weak

An interesting thread popped up on the SEA Starcraft II forums recently. I think the only thing that really makes it interesting and different from the others, of which there have been many, is that a blue poster actually replied to it. The thread was titled ‘Is Protoss the Weakest Race?’ and the player was seeking answers to the question. Blizzard deemed it worthy of a reply and hopped into the fray. They mention that the GSL was not the reason that zerg was buffed and that they always, absolutely always take multi-pronged approaches and never nerf or buff on whim. The most interesting line in the entire reply, though, has to be the following:

Some players have been reporting that the race feels a little ‘weak’, and that matches our in-house experience

Yes, you heard it here, protoss is weak. I know, I know, I am taking it totally out of context, but that is what us in the news industry do!  If you want to read the full reply from Blizzard about their eternal struggle to balance the game, check it out below!

I want to clarify that this is not the reason why zerg was adjusted. While we pay close attention to feedback from pro players and it is extremely valuable, one of the great flaws in pro player feedback is that they are usually so heavily focused on the experience that they have playing one race that they may not be evenhanded in their feedback.

Any alteration to StarCraft II balance is the result of a multi-pronged approach, including internal testing, statistical analysis of all leagues, modeling, player feedback (including shoutcasters, pro players, developers and of course, ladder players), etc. There’s a lot that goes into these decisions and they aren’t made lightly.

Protoss are a prime example. Some players have been reporting that the race feels a little ‘weak’, and that matches our in-house experience. Conversely, protoss is performing pretty well on the ladder. From yet another perspective, protoss players did not make a good showing in GSL 2, for example. This is painting a complex picture, and we’re approaching the situation cautiously.

Any adjustments we plan for the future will be very carefully considered, and will not be the result of feedback from a single source.

Blizzard Interview – South Korea, KeSPA & GOMTV

Bob Colayco, the Blizzard Public Relations Manager, was interviewed by Games.On.Net to talk about the success and challenges of getting Starcraft II: Wings of Liberty into South Korean territory. With Bob was Chris Davey, the Senior Brand Manager for Blizzard in the Australia & New Zealand region. As I actually mentioned a week or two ago here, it has not all been peaches and cream. Blizzard are struggling a little to get the Koreans to fully embrace Starcraft II. I can imagine that it would be a little hard to beat the 11 good years they had with Starcraft 1. So if you want to read about Blizzard wherein they actually talk a little bit about KeSPA, GOMTV, the lack of LAN mode for Starcraft II and their various other endeavours in South Korea you can find the full interview below. Various Tricks In Starcraft II

A posted called TheRabidDeer on the TeamLiquid forums has set up a nice little post about some of the interesting tricks you can pull off in Starcraft II. Some of them are pretty useless, but some may well come in handy, in some absurdly obscure situations, I guess. Cloak dodging, pathing exploits and my personal favourite, the colossus skywalking. You can watch a nice video by HDStarcraft, which I have embedded above, that covers that last one. So if you want to know all the little intricacies and tricks in Starcraft II I guess this post is for you. The real great part about it is probably that the guys replying to the post are also adding their own interesting and fun tricks, check it out!

Dreamhack

Dreamhack 2010 – Naama Wins!

One of the bigger Starcraft II Tournaments or events of the year, Dreamhack, has been completed. The event on the whole seemed like incredible fun and I wish I could just have sat here all weekend long to watch the streams. Day[9] and his casting partners were, obviously, amazing to watch. There was a bit of drama concerning the group stages being best of 1, but, those problems faded fast as the players started to concentrate fully on their games. oh, but wait, we are here to talk about the winner of Dreamhack!

In a pretty dramatic and incredibly exciting final series,  Naama was able to win the first two maps relatively easy. But  MaNa didn’t give up. He fought back, resisted the urge to just give up and took the following two maps. It came down to a final set, which the Finnish terran player Naama managed to win. So yes, 3 to 2, after an incredible weekend of Starcraft II, Naama walks away with over 10,000 Euro in prize money. MaNa pockets around 3,000 Euro for his second place and Fenix 2,000 for his third. Below you can find various sites coverage of the event and all the details you could possible want concerning Naama’s route to the finals.

This following piece of news came as somewhat of a surprise to me, apparently Starcraft II has been pirated 2.3 million times. According to TorrentFreak, a BitTorrent enthusiast site, StarCraft II has been illegally downloaded via BitTorrent 2.3 million times. With a download size of 7.19 GB, multiplied by 2.3 million, means that the traffic via BitTorrent was around 15.77 pedabyes. I am not sure what that even means but, geez does it sound like a lot.

Now Blizzard won’t be reporting any losses any time soon as Starcraft II has already sold over 3 million copies. But hey, who would want to play Starcraft II if you can’t even log into Battle.net? It just doesn’t make sense. You can read more about this interesting story below, enjoy!

Starcraft II Sales In Korea Lower Than Expected

So, Starcraft II may have sold three million copies in the first month of its release earlier this year but in the country of South Korea, where the original Starcraft is a massive e-Sports phenomenon, sales of the sci-fi RTS sequel have been slower and lower than expected. According to an article in Edge magazine, “only two to three per cent of Korean gamers” had purchased Starcraft II a month since the game officially launched in that country, despite a pretty huge $30 million promotional campaign in the country.

So that is pretty hardcore. We all know, though that Brood War is still huge in Korea and the chances are good that the Koreans are just taking a bit longer to warm up to Starcraft II. I don’t blame them, maybe they are just waiting for Blizzard to sort out any and all balance problems, improve Battle.net or any other number of things. Anyway, interesting read, you can check it out below!

Blizzard Gretech KeSPA Drama

Gretech/Blizzard/KeSPA Drama

The never-ending and totally exhausting saga of Blizzard vs KeSPA took an interesting new turn in the past few days. Gretech, who are on Blizzard’s side in this fight, sent their so-called “final offer” to the other TV leagues.  Gretech, who run GomTV, sent a list of demands to the likes of OSL and MSL with regards to Blizzard’s copyright and IP rights.  A forum poster from TeamLiquid was kind enough to translate the main points, which you can read below. I guess this kind of thing would be a bit dull for most, but for those of you that want to know every little thing that is happening in the world of Blizzard, and more directly Starcraft, I guess you should give it a read.

Gretech’s Final Offer to the Broadcasting Stations – TeamLiquid

  • Contest License Fees: 1 won per year
  • Broadcasting License Fees: 100,000,000 won per season (up to 3 seasons a year)
  • Length: One Year
  • Ownership Rights: The ownership of the broadcasting material created under this contract will be split 50:50 between the Broadcasting station and Gretech/Blizzard.
  • Logo and Branding: The Starcraft: Broodwar logo and Blizzard’s logo must be clearly visible in the stage, the set, and in broadcasted material
  • IP rights: Every license needs a clause acknowledging Blizzard for creating the game and for the ownership of the IP.
  • Sub-license: Gretech will have the rights to approve all sub-license contracts.
  • The revenue from the sub-licenses will be fairly split between Gretech and the Broadcasting Station
  • Sponsor: All revenue from Sponsorships will be the property of the broadcasting station
  • Approval: Whenever you use the Intellectual Property rights, you need approval from Blizzard and Gretech

Korean Fan Hates KeSPA

If you want even more KeSPA Drama you can also read a pretty interesting thread of a Korean fan that explains all the reasons he hates KeSPA. He goes into some pretty crazy detail and, well, gets a bit vulgar at times. But if you are trying to stay in the know and read anything and everything Starcraft related,  I guess you should check it out.

New eSports Association To Be Formed In Korea

With the conflict between Blizzard and KeSPA still unresolved, as I mentioned, the following was announced. The 17th of November has been chosen as the official establishment date of  a Starcraft II association / organization as well as an orientation at the GOMtv studio. It will involve 7 teams that are currently participating in GSL, plus their coaches and players.

There are a lot of big name Korean teams involved and there will be a Starcraft II game team association, players association, and an advisory board. The first president will be Won Jeong Uk, the current the coach of StarTale.

This association or organization aims to be official and approved by Blizzard, and it will deal with the following:

  • Protection of rights for the gamers and teams
  • Operations of StarCraft 2 team’s business-league sponsors
  • Arbitrator for when there is an issue between a gamer and a team
  • Furthering the popularity of StarCraft 2 leagues that are linked with Blizzard-GomTV (this most likely means, leagues that opened legit with permission from them)

Also, the association apparently has no interest in profit and will try to keep the fans as involved as possible, in the best possible way. Their first move will be to support teams with PCs and start online team league.

The new president asks that the fans be supportive, the players be supportive and everyone have strength and, well, show support to help the organization grow.

In closing this is sort of like a Starcraft II version of KeSPA that aims to do things right. It’s some really interesting stuff and I really do think that this means only good things for Starcraft II in Korea. As usual there is no shortage of drama in the international Starcraft II Community. There are transfers, rants and interviews. Read about everything that’s been happening right here!

Idra Talks About Patch 1.1

The Zerg Starcraft II Pro IdrA shared his feelings on the state of Starcraft II before and after Patch 1.1. He mentions how he thinks the patch won’t change enough in terms of balance and that Blizzard are overlooking too many obvious problems. See the full interview below.

HuK To Liquid – HuK To Korea

The highly successful big name Protoss player HuK has left the clan of Millenium and moved to Liquid. Not just for any reason though, he is also, like so many others, making the move to Korea to pursue his Starcraft II Pro Gaming Carreer. There is obviously a lot to be learnt there for Starcraft II players or any gamers for that matter. That much is evident after seeing all the foreigners being knocked out of the GS2L. You can read an interview with HuK about the matter and see the full details below or over at TeamLiquid.

Fruitseller Drama

Cool, (aka Fruiseller, aka Fruitdealer) has been causing quite a stir. He was caught totally out of character, totally uncool, recently when asked about Starcraft II’s first balance patch, 1.1. He said quite a few incredibly hateful things and seemed on the verge of a breakdown. Luckily, a couple of hours later he changed his tune and said that he was alright with the new changes and was definitely coping. You should all do yourselves the favour of reading the translated quotes in the link below. Enjoy!
