Starcraft Pulse

I put all the news together this week as I just had sooo much to do over the past couple of days. This is a long one! I also had to use a different method of rendering. I rendered to .mp4 this time around instead of .wmv. I find it doesn’t look quite as good… but it does render a little faster and the video size is a little smaller. Because of the videos length I had to render it this way. I will experiment and see what works best for the future! (If anyone knows the best ways of rendering for YouTube at around 720p or 1080p for games and recorded footage, let me know!) Otherwise, enjoy Pulse 38 and have a great Christmas!

Shakuras Plateau Removed

Just a random little side-note-ish mention.  The map Shakuras Plateau seems to have been removed from the Starcraft II 1v1 Ladder Map List. There has been no official word about this yet but there are some rumors of invisible building exploits on the map that were being abused a little too much. I guess time will tell if Shakuras will be making a comeback or not. Keep checking back here for more.

Grubby To Enter Assembly Winter

Just a quick, if slightly random mention. The huge Finnish LAN, Assembly Winter, is hosting a Starcraft II Tournament with an impressive 5000 Euro prize pool. This was, apparently, enough to lure the Warcraft III legend Grubby out of hiding. He is set to participate and his race is still unknown. The event is taking place in early Febuary, 2011. I thought I would just share that little titbit for all the Grubby fans out there.

TIME Magazine Top 10 of Everything – Starcraft II

Starcraft II has snagged yet another award, or mention at least, in the TIME Magazine Top 10 of everything lists. Sadly for us Starcraft fans, the game only managed a 9th place, with Alan Wake taking the #1 spot. Still, though, it is on the list and that alone is an impressive feat! So if you’re interested in the rest of that list you’d better head on over to the TIME website to check it out. You can also read their little description of Starcraft II and reasons for picking it as a Top 10 contender below, enjoy.

The Top 10 Everything of 2010 – TIME

Good things come to those who wait, and boy, did we wait for StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty. Twelve years after the original game was released, we finally got to play as Terrans (humans), Zergs (alien slugs) or Protoss (alien psionic bugs) once again. The space saga follows the Terran story line as the Terrans fight off attacks from the extraterrestrials trying to take over. StarCraft II’s game play has the right mix of old and new. It’s easy to pick up — even if you haven’t played the original in a while — and remains interesting and new. More important, this game focused on the multiplayer competition, which is what players loved most about the original. Here’s to the real-time strategy game slowing down Internet connections everywhere so we can enjoy our LAN parties.

GSL3 oGsMC

GSL3 – oGsMC Wins!

The GOMTV Global Starcraft II League’s third season has finally come to an end! The final match between TSL_Rain and oGsMC was a best of 7 with pre-determined maps. There was also an interesting little bonus for the audience. Both players were in booths that moved forward with each win, forward towards the trophy that they were battling it out for. That, if anything, must have added a little bit of extra tension and stress to these games. I won’t be going into full detail about the games here, I will simply give you the results and point you towards a ton of great sites that did amazing coverage of the finals. oGsMC played amazingly, as he seemed to be doing for the entire GSL3. He managed to best TSL_Rain with a rather impressive 4 to 1. So yes, MC from the clan Old Generations has won GSL Season 3 and we have our first non-zerg winner from our first non-zerg-containing finals! Not taking anything away from Rain at all here, he played amazingly to get to the finals, but it was just not meant to be. So as I mentioned, below you can find a bunch of links to sites that did some really in-depth coverage.

Code-S Groups Finalized

With the GSL3 now concluded and 2010 fast coming to an end, it’s time to look to the future. The Code-S groups for the GSL Season 4 have been released, as I mentioned before. There are quite a few groups that quite a few people are slightly unhappy about. Three oGs members in one group, Jinro and IdrA sharing another? That is just the way of things. If they are going to win, they are going to win. Have a look at those groups below and let me know what you think. Are we in for a treat next year? Mass upsets or more of the same? Exciting!

For those of you that don’t know exactly how it works just yet, GosuGamers have an amazing post up detailing every little detail of the Code-A to Code-S to Code-A happenings. It is, in short, as I mentioned before. The bottom players from Code-S play against the top players from Code-A. Should those Code-S players lose out, they get dropped to Code-A and the Code-A guys move up to Code-S. Woah.

Anyway, check the post out below for the full list of players and how its gonna be working!

Player Interviews

Now for a couple of interviews. I am only going to mention these incredibly briefly in the hopes of saving a bit of time. Let’s have a look!

Firstly we have a nice nostalgic interview with one of the first ‘foreign’ players to ever enter the pro-gaming scene in South Korea, [9] Thor. Yes, this is well before Starcraft II’s time. He talks about how life was different to back then, how he doesn’t feel Starcraft II is as fun as Brood War was and much more.

Fenix Interview

The Peruvian boy wonder, the terran player Fenix, has ambitious plans for 2011 including a will to win and plans to participate in the GSL, MLG and IEM. Did I mention he plans on winning those too? In his interview he talks about all those topics, plus how he views pro-gaming as a business, one he plans to run exceedingly well.

John The Translator Interview

John, the translator we’re used to hearing and seeing between games at the GOMTV events, has finally been interviewed. He talks about how he got to work at GOMTV, his first impressions of Tasteless and Artosis, which I will tell you about in just a second, and how being at the GSL helps his Starcraft II game too. Apparently GOMTV is going to be setting up a team house close to the GOMTV headquarters for foreign players, so they won’t have to pay for their stay in Korea. He also briefly mentions the plans that the guys from the GSL had of having qualifiers all around the world for their future GSL seasons. The interview is great and the best part was probably his first impressions of Tasteless and Artosis. The first time he met the duo he hated them, Artosis seemed cocky and arrogant, while Tasteless seemed stupid, but later he realized that they were in fact really nice guys.

Check the video interview out below, courtesy of VT Gaming, and above you can also see the speech from the GSL Season 2 finals that made him famous. Enjoy!

This time it is part of his next GG Vision episode and he has a chat with one of the better known voices of Starcraft II, JP McDaniel. The guys from over at sn.se have a nice, also rather lengthy, interview up with none other than the terran superstar and GSL Round of 4 player Jinro. They asked about his thoughts on South Korea, the GSL and his games there. They warn, as seems to be the trend, that it is an incredibly long interview. That is most definitely not a problem, I mean really, who wouldn’t want to read a long interview with The Gorilla Terran? Heart of the Swarm Ending Leaked?

Spoilers incoming, watch out!

A video has hit the net in a big way. This video is claiming to be the ending cinematic for the first Starcraft II Expansion – Heart of the Swarm. Just a quick warning, I am not sure how legal this is or anything like that because the videos are dropping like flies. The ones that were uploaded to YouTube and Vimeo were removed due to copyright claims. I guess that just means that it might well be real.

The clip has no lip syncing, uses different voice actors than the normal, lacks proper textures and uses images in some places to complete it, but, it is definitely Starcraft II and Heart of the Swarm. I think.

Kotaku did a bit of detective work and even asked Blizzard for a comment on the video. The reply was the standard. “Blizzard Entertainment does not comment on rumors or speculation.”Another interesting bit of information is that The Third Floor, whose watermark appears lower right, is a production company listing Blizzard as a client.

So real or not, Heart of the Swarm is pretty long off and does not even have a release date set for it yet. Sooo, if you did get a glimpse at the video, savour it, you won’t see more for a long, long time!

Speculation On leaked Blizzard Product

Do you remember the Leaked Blizzard Schedule that we had a look at a week or two ago? Well, it seems like it may or may not be linked to the recent resignation of Ye Weilun, Blizzard China’s general manager. Yes, it has been said that he was the one to leak it.

Aditionally it seems like several analysts have been investigating the product schedule, fully disecting it, breaking it down and monitoring the airwaves for more information. They have come to the conclusion that all the information on it is entirely plausible. That means we might well see Diablo III and Starcraft II: Phoenix, whatever that is, next year.

Yes, yes, we are still just speculating and talking about rumors here, but it’s fun, isn’t it? Read more below!

GOMTV Talks GSL 2011

In related news GOMtv has announced how the GSL will be working in 2011. It turns out the system in place for 2011 is a little different from what most people thought it would be.

In short, the post on TeamLiquid tells us that the good news is we will be seeing at least 4 spots reserved for top foreign players who won recent big tourneys or who’ve shown considerable performances in non-Korean competitions or leagues. The bad news is that Code-A is now only 32 players.

There is an extensive list of changes and additions to the rules and workings of the GSL and if you are into these technicalities then I guess you can check it all out below, as I said, courtesy of TeamLiquid.

Day 9 Cartoon Sketch – Speed Drawing

Are you a fan of speed drawings? Are you a fan of Day[9] and Starcraft II? Well, well, well, this is something right up your alley. Artist Joey Judkins says that he has never seen Sean in real life and doesn’t really know what his lower body looks like. That is not a problem, though, he will just make something up. In his sketch we see Day[9] with a rather attractive zerg lower body, drinking a bottle of terran blood.

I absolutely can’t wait to see what Joey does next. See the video of the sketching process above and the finished product below. Enjoy!

Bischu To Dignitas

Team Dignitas has picked up the relatively big name protoss player Bischu. They comment on it saying that the one weakness of their world-class Starcraft II team was probably the absence of a Protoss ace. They also say that after looking for one for quite a while, they were more than happy to fill the spot with Bischu. Good luck to Bischu and all the Dignitas guys and you can read the full interview with Bischu and post on Team-Dignitas.net.

Starcraft 2 Cheats

Starcraft II – Single Player Cheats

You’ve already discovered some of the cheat codes hidden within StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty, but you haven’t found them all. Blizzard thought it was about time to lift the veil and reveal all of the official codes available in the single-player mode. Remember, cheat codes can only be used in single-player mode by pressing the enter key within the game and typing in the codes as shown below within the chat box.

Now, I wouldn’t usually even care for cheats myself, but I will say that the codes have a ton of pop culture references. Lines and catch phrases from big names such as Star Wars, Aliens, The Matrix, World of Warcraft, Lord of the Rings, Galaxy Quest and many, many others can be found in the list of codes.

Below you can also read the disclaimer, yes, that’s right. They just tell you that using these cheats will prevent achievements from being unlocked. Now really, is it still worth it? Check the full list of pretty humorous cheat codes out below, use them, don’t use them, whatever.

Caution: Before using cheat codes it’s important to understand that using them will prevent additional achievement gains you might have earned through normal play until either a new campaign is started or a prior save is loaded (one from before the use of the first cheat).

Paul Sams Talks KeSPA

Blizzard Entertainment’s Chief Operating Officer (COO) Paul Sams led a press conference in South Korea this past Thursday which was pretty much just to put his foot down at the behaviour of cable channels MBC Game, and OnGameNet. Blizzard and Paul Sams say that the will strongly defend their intellectual property against anyone that continues to broadcast Starcraft tournaments without the consent of the company. Back in 2007 KeSPA sold broadcasting rights to local broadcasters without Blizzard Entertainment’s consent. This was the action that triggered their relationship with Blizzard to deteriorate, according to The Korea Times. Read a quote from the interview or just follow the link to the full thing below.

Blizzard Vows to Protect Their IP and eSport Broadcast Rights – BlizzPlanet

It’s unfortunate that the e-sports industry in Korea is lagging behind other industries in recognition of intellectual property (IP) rights and the basic principles related to them. Korea is the only region in the world where we have had to resort to litigation to protect our IP rights.

StarCraft is not a public domain offering, as Blizzard has invested significant money and resources to create the StarCraft game and the overall StarCraft universe.

Classifying StarCraft and other e-sports as part of the public domain deprives developers such as Blizzard of their IP rights. There will be no incentive to do what Blizzard had done to balance the games for competition, which is a more difficult task than creating a normal game.’

Back in 2007, KeSPA sold the broadcast rights for 1.7 billion won to cover three years, despite the fact that we never granted them the broadcast rights to sell, and they do not have the rights today. The yearly broadcasting fees were five times more than what Gom TV is asking for today, so I think it’s hypocritical for MBC Game and OGN (OnGameNet) to complain about the proposal.
Paul Sams, Blizzard Entertainment

KeSPA thinks that things are being misunderstood and that the current situation regarding negotiations and the conflict points in Paul Sam’s press conference, and thus, So they have released an official statement that apparently aims to straighten many of these misconceptions. A quote from their statement:

KeSPA’s response to Paul Sam’s statements – TeamLiquid

“We’re disappointed by Blizzard’s Interview that devalues the efforts of the organizations that had developed eSports for 10 years”
KeSPA

Will this drama ever end? Who knows. It is news, though, so I will cover all I can find about it. Keep checking back here for more!

Midnight Bans

South Korean Children – Midnight Ban On Gaming

Yeah, yeah, this is  not directly aimed at Starcraft II, I know. But anyway, here’s a little piece of news that may or may not affect the future of Starcraft II Players in South Korea. Apparently South Korea’s government is close to adopting a “Cinderella” law to ban youngsters from playing online games past midnight amidst growing concerns about Internet addiction.

A bill to be submitted to parliament as early as this month will require South Korean online game companies to cut off services at midnight for users registered as younger than 16, they say. That is pretty harsh, but, in a country where players can get that little bit too obsessive about playing, I think it might ba good thing. Let us just hope this does not squash the dreams of some, young, aspiring BoxeR.

The South Korean government is considering all their options and will keep monitoring the situation, but they say that they are just looking out for their youth and the future of their country. Read more about that and the official announcement below.

The Intel Extreme Masters European finals are almost good to go, with just one empty slot waiting for tomorrow’s final qualifying game.  The current list of players is actually a little shocking.  Ten of the eleven players qualified so far are Terran players. Cheaters Banned

Starcraft II Players Banned

Blizzard has just recently issued a new round of account suspensions and bans to StarCraft II players who were in violation of the Battle.net Terms of Use for cheating and/or using hack programs while playing. That is great news, as always. Blizzard say that they will be continuing to keep watch on Battle.net and take action as needed. You can read the full quote below, rejoice! 😀

We recently issued a new round of account suspensions and bans to StarCraft II players who were in violation of the Battle.net Terms of Use for cheating and/or using hack programs while playing. In addition to undermining the spirit of fair competition that’s essential to play on Battle.net, cheating and hacking can lead to stability and performance issues with the service. As always, maintaining a stable, safe, and secure online-gaming experience for legitimate players is a top priority for us, and we’ll be continuing to keep watch on Battle.net and take action as needed.

Bob Colayco Interview – Starcraft II In Korea

Bob Colayco, the Blizzard Public Relations Manager, was interviewed by Games.On.Net to talk about the success and challenges of getting Starcraft II: Wings of Liberty into South Korean territory. With Bob was Chris Davey, the Senior Brand Manager for Blizzard in the Australia & New Zealand region. As I actually mentioned a week or two ago here, it has not all been peaches and cream. Blizzard are struggling a little to get the Koreans to fully embrace Starcraft II. I can imagine that it would be a little hard to beat the 11 good years they had with Starcraft 1. So if you want to read about Blizzard wherein they actually talk a little bit about KeSPA, GOMTV, the lack of LAN mode for Starcraft II and their various other endeavours in South Korea you can find the full interview below. Enjoy!

Starcraft II On Touchscreen

Starcraft II is much more fun on a touch screen! Well, it looks like it is, at least! A nice video has been released that shows two guys battle it out against each other in Starcraft II on two pretty big touch screens.  It is, as they say, a completely interactive and immersive experience and wow, am I jealous. You can see that video below along with a description of what’s actually going on and what’s gone into it.

Starcraft 1 On The iPad

Tying in pretty much 100% with the previous piece of news it seems like you can now also play Starcraft 1 on your iPad. Yes, indeed, and this may well be useful to quite a few more people as I think a lot more people have iPads than those huge touch screens in the previous video. So, if you’re keen to find out how Starcraft 1 works on the iPad,  how it was done or see how well it performs, then you’d better check the post out below.

Code-S List Finalized

GOMTV has finally revealed, on their website, how the points system for ranking players for Code S and Code A works. It is pretty simple, the further you make it the more points you get, the amounts increase very, very fast, just as the prizes do for the GSL. I think it will work really well and we are set for some really competitive play in 2011.

Below you can also find a nice long list containing all the players from the GSL 1, 2 and 3 and their current points and ranks. As expected, Fruitdealer is currently top of the logs with NesTea a close second. It is very interesting and definitely worth a read. The last 8 spots on the Code-S list are resevered for the Top 8 of the GSL Season 3, so good luck to those guys.

Sls Clan Roster

SlayerS (sls) Clan Roster

We have been treated with a look at the Slayers, or sls clan roster. Now, the names on the list are mostly unknowns but there is one that everyone seems to know, Cella, from the former clan werra. There are a lot of interesting names and we knew before that boxer was aiming to get the up-and-comers instead of the already well known big names. Interesting, check that entire list in the link below. I didn’t bother pasting the entire list in my post as most of the names are Asian characters anyway.
