Happy StarcraftingYou can read more about the amazing artwork used above at the bottom of the post!

Happy Starcrafing! ūüėÄ I just wanted to say a few things here before getting to the news. You will realise, when you head into this rather lengthy post, that I have added a smalls section to the start of both the Tournament & Event News and Community News sections. This little summary of news posts makes it a little easier to set these posts up. I throw all the news in there that I feel is not really worth actually elaborating on in the post, while still keeping it in there for all those die-hards¬†out there. Sooo be sure to skim over those and make sure you aren’t missing something you don’t want to miss! Otherwise, enjoy the news and thanks for all the support!

Starcraft II Patch 1.2 – Release Date?

To start this off I just¬†wanted to give everyone a heads up, Blizzard confirmed that they’ve been doing more fixes and testing on an internal PTR¬†and that¬†Starcraft¬†II Patch 1.2¬†is expected to come hit the live servers next week, if all goes well.¬†That is really great news, so, if you want to prepare for the changes that are coming I suggest you give the latest version of the PTR patch notes¬†a quick read, you can find them below, along with the official announcement of the patches release. GSL – Code-S / Code-A

The GSL¬†play-days are flying by fast and we are being treated with more and more extremely high quality play. There really have been some amazing games, but, there have also been a few upsets. So let’s have a look how all our favourite Code-S and Code-A players are doing. There is an amazing thread up on the TeamLiquid¬†forums that was put together by a user named motbob¬†and well, look no further for your GSL results.

In the Code-A big names such as IMJunwi, aLivefOu, oGsTOP, sCfOu, Loner and ST.July. have made it through to the next round. Well known players that failed to advance in the Code-A include TankboyPrime.WE, ST.Ace and LiquidRet.

Players that have advanced to the next round in Code-S are IMNesTea, TheBestfOu, IMMvp, oGsZenio, SlayerS_BoxeR, oGsHyperdub, choyafOu,  TSL.sSKS, NSP.Genius, ST.RainbOw, oGsMC and finally oGsNaDa.The Code-S has not been without upset, though. The following big names failed to progress РPolt & MakaPrime, The Fruitdealer, who lost to IMMvp and oGsZenio, HongUnPrime, oGsTheWind, KyrixZenith, TSL_Rain, LeenockfOu, sanZenith and oGsInca.

There are more matches to be played tomorrow, so as I mentioned, if you check the post linked below out you will get a much clearer picture of what’s going on right now. It really is well put together and gives all the right information. Keep checking back here for more GSL updates, though.

GSL Official Map Change Coming Soon

In some more GSL¬†related news, GSL¬†Code-S pro-gamer NSPGenius¬†posted a thread on PlayXP¬†about an upcoming, and official, GSL¬†map change. According to NSPGenius,¬†the four¬†bad maps that are set to be¬†pulled out from GSL¬†maplist¬†are Steppes of War, Delta Quadrant, Blistering Sands and one last¬†unknown one. The maps set to replace those maps are the following: Aiur¬†Garden, Tal’Darim¬†Altar, Biohazard,¬†Crossfire and Terminus Re. According to a reply from GSL¬†staff it seems like the Gisado¬†Star-Challenge is now testing the new maps for next GSL season.¬†I guess we will just have to wait and see if these new ones will actually get used, or if Blizzard will step in and step up with their maps. Who knows, see images of the new maps below along with the full quotes, enjoy!

GOMtv Send Your Favourite Player To Korea

GOMtv¬†has sent out a request to the community seeking their opinions on which foreigners to invite to participate in the next season of the GSL, starting in February. They let us know, in the same quote, that there will be at least four spots to fill. This means that players who cannot play in the preliminaries or were not able to win a spot in the qualification has still the chance to play in the Global StarCraft¬†2 League’s main event. So if you are keen to help out or just see what others are saying you can head on over to the GOMtv support forums to check it out.

eG Recruit DeMusliM & Promises GSL Action

One of the bigger pieces of player and clan news¬†of the past¬†week is that eG bought DeMusliM¬†out of his running contract with mTw¬†in order to add him to their already impressive Starcraft¬†II¬†line-up. eG already¬†currently homes several stars of the RTS scene such as¬†Starcraft¬†II Badboy¬†IdrA, Warcraft III legend Grubby and many others. DeMusliM¬†released an official statement about the transfer that basically just said he was thrilled to be part of eG and that he was glad that the guys from mTw¬†took it so well and supported him throughout. You can read the full details of the transfer below along with DeMusliM’s full statement.

Right after this it was announced that eG have plans to set up a house in South Korea where their players would be able to prepare for and compete in competitions such as the Global Starcraft¬†2 League and the Global Starcraft¬†2 Team League. Aditionally, it was revealed that they would in fact be sending Benjamin “Demuslim” Baker to South Korea to participate in the future qualification rounds¬†of the GSL. Starcraft II In Western eSports: Is A Korean Model Needed?

FNATIC¬†recently published an article by Marc ‘frequency’ Onofrio¬†where he argues that there is no need for StarCraft II to be televised in the West for it to gain mainstream popularity and success.¬†He¬†claims¬†that online streaming is a far more efficient and logical way to push the game in the right direction. He says he’d love to¬†hear your opinions on the topic, and any general feedback/questions. It is an interesting concept and, well, one that is actually quite often mentioned and talked about. Obviously streaming and online is the way forward, the whole world can be involved in absolutely any event from absolutely anywhere. But, it’s just not the same as a live event, is it? Ah well, if you are interested, check that out below, definitely worth a read!

ESL TV: RotterdaM University

The chief of Intel Extreme Masters, Michal ‘Carmac’ Blicharz, is set to be featured in a new show on ESL TV where he will go from a¬†total¬†noob¬†to a Diamond player. How, you ask? Well this will be done with the help of¬† Kevin ‘RotterdaM’ van der Kooi. The show will be called RotterdaM¬†University and will follow the process of the former WarCraft¬†III¬† legend RotterdaM¬†teaching Carmac¬†every little thing he needs to know about StarCraft¬†II. Carmac¬†is a well-known eSports¬†journalist, having worked for sites as SK-Gaming and Global Gaming League, but, one thing is certain, he sucks at Starcraft II. GSL 2011

A New Year – GSL

It is a new year and the next season of the Global Starcraft¬†II League has begun. As I keep mentioning, this one is going to work a little different. This is the first GSL¬†Sponsorship League. So yes, the players at the top get paid to just play the game, in the GSL. TeamLiquid¬†has, as usual, set up a post covering it all, and I really mean all of it. Believe it or not, a lot of people still don’t know exactly how the GSL¬†works, and well, I won’t blame them for that. There really is a lot going on in this new season. Code-S, Code-A, Up-and-down, those are the types of matches we’re gonna be seeing throughout this maiden sponsorship season of the GSL. So if you’re one of that large number that is maybe not quite 100% absolutely sure how it is set to work this year, check the post out below detailing it all. It even covers all the teams participating, has a look at the groups and takes a pretty in-depth look at most of the players.

[GSL] ‚ÄúA New Year‚ÄĚ – 2011 Preview¬†– TeamLiquid

For those that are totally on the ball and are already enjoying the GOM TV live streams every day,  I guess you want results, instead. The first play-day was on January the 2nd and featured quite a few impressive Code-S players duking it out. The opening ceremony was indeed something to behold with a brilliant light and fire show to welcome all the Code-S players to the new season and introduce them, or re-introduce them, to the cheering crowds. The big winners of the day? GSL Champ IMNesTea and TheBestfOu. On the second day we saw Code-S and Code-A games. In Code-S the big winners were IMMvp and oGsZenio and sadly, GSL Season 1 winner Fruitdealer lost his games. In Code-S Junwi and Zenith won their games and advanced.  The third play-day was also completed and the two players progressing in the Code-S from that group are SlayerS_BoxeR and oGsHyperdub. Keep checking back for more!

Want to follow the GSL yourself? There are a couple of great sites you can check out to do just that.

Global Starcraft Team League

In another small piece of GSL related news, it seems like GOMtv is gearing up to host a Global Starcraft Team League, GSTL for short. They announced back in December that in 2011 the GSTL will take place in February, right after GSL Season 4. 8 teams will compete for a pretty large prize pool. Teams are to be chosen based on all the points of their current players in the GSL Code-S and Code-A. It sounds like fun and it will also be great to see which teams come out on top there, not just the individual players. Read more about all of that below!

Tasteless – Observer No More

As usual the GSL¬†news, drama and controversy¬†does not end with the results. It seems like in what some are calling a shocking turn of events, Tasteless is no longer the observer for the English GSL¬†stream. *gasp!* Yes, for those that didn’t know, at the start of the new GSL¬†season Tastosis¬†made an announcement that Tasteless will not be¬†observing GSL¬†games anymore. The guys at GOM¬†Tv have¬†hired an entirely new observer to¬†fill¬†that role. There has been a lot of speculation as to whether this is a good idea or not, it seems like quite a few people would prefer Tasteless to be doing it. Why? Well it seems like the new guy is missing quite a lot of the action and, well, often there are just little things that Tasteless and/or Artosis are either talking about or want to point out that just get lost in translation, never showing up on our streams. Oh well, I can imagine that Tasteless was in over his head with the commentating and observing so this is probably for the best. Read more below!

A Letter From An Unloved Viewer

In our last bit of GSL, or GOMtv related goodness, we have a misunderstood fan that in fact only wanted to offer to help out with the interview translations at the GSL, but ended up just saying it all wrong. He said that he could do John the translators job better than John himself does it, by accident of course. So, Tasteless mentioned this on the livestream and, well, our misunderstood fan got a little too much attention. He proceeded to type a letter to everyone watching the GSL, Tasteless and John himself, conveying how sorry he was and how wrong he was to do it the way he did. There was more done and said, but if you want to read this tale about heartache, misunderstandings and interview translations I guess you can check the full thing out below. Enjoy!

All the signs are pointing toward the fact that there are big things to come and our baby Starcraft II will be at the heart of it all. PC World have a bunch of interviews up with varios big names in the international eSports scene. djWHEAT, IdrA, LiquidNazgul and many others involved with all the different games being played competitively at the moment. This really is a great read, especially if you are new to the eSports scene and want to know what to expect from the next year. Find the full thing below!

TIME Magazine Top 10 of Everything – Starcraft II

Starcraft¬†II has snagged yet another award, or mention at least, in the TIME Magazine Top 10 of everything lists.¬†Sadly for us Starcraft¬†fans, the game only managed a 9th place, with Alan Wake taking the #1 spot. Still, though, it is on the list and that alone is an impressive feat! So if you’re interested in the rest of that list you’d better head on over to the TIME website to check it out.¬†You can also read their little description of Starcraft II and reasons for picking it as a Top 10 contender below, enjoy.

The Top 10 Everything of 2010 – TIME

Good things come to those who wait, and boy, did we wait for StarCraft¬†II: Wings of Liberty. Twelve years after the original game was released, we finally got to play as Terrans (humans), Zergs¬†(alien slugs) or Protoss¬†(alien psionic¬†bugs) once again. The space saga follows the Terran story line as the Terrans fight off attacks from the extraterrestrials trying to take over. StarCraft II‚Äôs game play has the right mix of old and new. It‚Äôs easy to pick up ‚ÄĒ even if you haven‚Äôt played the original in a while ‚ÄĒ and remains interesting and new. More important, this game focused on the multiplayer competition, which is what players loved most about the original. Here‚Äôs to the real-time strategy game slowing down Internet connections everywhere so we can enjoy our LAN parties.

GSL3 РoGsMC Wins!

The GOMTV¬†Global Starcraft¬†II League’s third season has finally¬†come to an end! The final match between TSL_Rain and oGsMC¬†was a best of 7 with pre-determined¬†maps.¬†There was also¬†an interesting¬†little bonus¬†for the audience. Both players were in booths that moved forward with each win, forward towards the trophy that they were battling it out for. That, if anything, must have added a little bit of extra tension and stress to these games. I won’t be going into full detail about the games here, I will simply give you the results and point you towards a ton of great sites that did amazing coverage of the finals. oGsMC¬†played amazingly, as he seemed to be doing for the entire GSL3. He managed to best TSL_Rain with a rather impressive 4 to 1. So yes, MC from the clan Old Generations has won¬†GSL¬†Season 3 and we have our first non-zerg¬†winner from our first non-zerg-containing finals!¬†Not taking anything away from Rain at all here, he played amazingly to get to the finals, but it was just not meant to be. Code-S Groups Finalized

With the GSL3¬†now concluded and 2010 fast coming to an end, it’s time to look to the future. The Code-S groups for the GSL¬†Season 4 have been released, as I mentioned before. There are quite a few groups that quite a few people are slightly unhappy about. Three oGs¬†members in one group, Jinro¬†and IdrA sharing another? That is just the way of things. If they are going to win, they are going to win. Have a look at those groups below and let me know what you think. Are we in for a treat next year? Mass upsets or more of the same? Exciting!

Player Interviews

Now for a couple of interviews. I am only going to mention these incredibly briefly in the hopes of saving a bit of time. Let’s have a look!

Firstly we have a nice nostalgic interview with one of the first ‘foreign’ players to ever enter the pro-gaming scene in South Korea, [9] Thor. Yes, this is well before Starcraft¬†II’s time. He talks about how life was different to back then, how he doesn’t feel Starcraft II is as fun as Brood War was and much more.

Fenix Interview

The Peruvian boy wonder, the terran player Fenix, has ambitious plans for 2011 including a will to win and plans to participate in the GSL, MLG and IEM. Did I mention he plans on winning those too? In his interview he talks about all those topics, plus how he views pro-gaming as a business, one he plans to run exceedingly well.

John The Translator Interview

John, the translator we’re used to hearing and seeing between games at the¬†GOMTV¬†events, has finally been interviewed. He talks about how he got to work at GOMTV, his first impressions of Tasteless and Artosis, which I will tell you about in just a second, and how being at the GSL¬†helps his Starcraft¬†II game too. Apparently GOMTV¬†is going to be setting up a team house close to the GOMTV¬†headquarters for foreign players, so they won’t have to pay for their stay in Korea. He also briefly mentions the plans that the guys from the GSL¬†had of having qualifiers all around the world for their future GSL¬†seasons. The interview is great and the best part was probably his first impressions of Tasteless and Artosis. The first time he met the duo he hated them, Artosis seemed cocky and arrogant, while Tasteless seemed stupid, but later he realized that they were in fact really nice guys.

Check the video interview out below, courtesy of VT Gaming, and above you can also see the speech from the GSL Season 2 finals that made him famous. Enjoy!

They asked about his thoughts on South Korea, the GSL and his games there.¬†They warn, as seems to be the trend, that it is an incredibly long interview.¬†That is most definitely not a problem, I mean really, who wouldn’t want to read a long interview with The Gorilla Terran? GSL – Code S

So if you haven’t heard yet the next GSL¬†season won’t be open for all, like the previous ones were.¬† Season 4 will mark the beginning of a new age for the GSL, their new ‘Code Hierarchy’ will be in place¬†where players are divided based on past performance.¬† Newcomers will still be able to qualify, but only for the lowest code. That Code-S is starting to look a lot more valueble right now.

In the group stages every player will play against every player in his group in a three game set, and the top two players in each group will advance to the round of sixteen. As I also mentioned before, after each season the top Code- A players will change places with the bottom Code-S players.

After looking at those groups I gotta say things are definitely going to be intense in the GSL4. You can find the full groups in the link below!

You can also read below about a few rumors that are going around which I, for the record, don’t believe. A fan thinks that GOMTV¬†is supporting BoxeR by placing him, mostly at least, against terran¬†players. Now, this fan thinks that, and may or may not be right, that BoxeR’s¬†strongest matchup is in fact TvT. He points out that he is not hating or dissing, he just finds it a little funny.

One thing that is funny is that GOMtv has actually directly responded to this fans doubts and provided us all with an explanation, and some peace of mind. They say that they put top 4 players from last season in each bracket, then tried to split each race evenly into each bracket. And if they follow this method strictly all the brackets would look the same or be balanced at least. So right now apparently each bracket has 6~8 zergs, 5~7 terrans and 3 protoss. Interesting.
