Patch 1.3.0

StarCraft II: Wings of Libery РPatch 1.3.0

StarCraft¬†II: Wings of Liberty patch 1.3.0 is currently in development and available for testing on the PTR. Blizzard tells us that the¬†early test-version of the¬†patch contains notable improvements to the Join Custom Game interface, a preview of the new Grandmaster League, several balance adjustments, bug fixes, and more. Now, those are the official highlights, but us, as StarCraft¬†II players,¬†see different things as¬†highlights. In what has got to be my favourite addition, Blizzard have added a customizable¬†observer and replay UI to the game. These new ‘overlays’ as they¬†have come to be called, do everything from show player names¬†and colors, track supply and unit counts¬†to¬†even keeping an eye on both players’ resources¬†and their collection rates. It really is something that is going to make my life as a shoutcaster¬†a lot easier and definitely going to improve things for players opting to spectate games instead of play them.

But now, on to the dreaded balance changes. In the general changes, players can no longer hide units by setting them in a close proximity patrol. (Like that silly Viking flower!) Of the three races, most players seem to think that protoss was hit the hardest with the removal of the Khaydarin Amulet upgrade. (+25 starting energy) Others would say terran were the most damaged in this patch, with a bunker build time increase of 5 seconds and stim pack research time increase of 30 seconds, too. I would probably have to agree with them there. Lastly, the zerg changes, which are exclusively to Infestors. Their health was increased from 90 to 110 and their Fungal Growth ability now fires a missile instead of bein instant cast. The stun duration has also been decreased from 8 seconds to 4 seconds. That does mean that there was a double in damage per second.

Other than all of those changes there were just the normal bug fixes and editor improvements, which you can read all about below!

Patch 1.3.0 Extras

As a few extras related to Patch 1.3.0 you can also see the new observer mode in action, courtesy TheGunRun. I have to say I can’t wait to use it. I wasn’t even aware¬†of all the cool, and useful,¬†options¬†that you could enable or of the fact that you can entirely hide the bottom bar of the UI, thereby increasing your viewing pleasure by multitudes. I just hope they set it up that we can hide everything except the minimap, that would be perfect. Check that video out, you won’t regret it and you won’t be able to contain your excitement! If you are interested you can also check the new and most definitely improved league icons out below, courtesy of the TeamLiquid¬†forums. These are the same icons that were shown during BlizzCon 2010, but, it’s great to see them finally implemented. Read about, and check out, all those extras below!

Ladder Map Pool Changes

To improve overall map balance and keep StarCraft II ladder play fresh and engaging, Blizzard recently made several changes to the ladder map pool. Below you can find a list that comprises of all the maps currently available, separated by bracket. You will be able to see the maps that were removed, the new maps that were added and the ones that stayed exactly where they were. If you are the kind of person that prefers not to read too much, you can in fact see all the aforementioned information in video form, too. There was a lot of information given with these changes, additions and removals and I suggest you watch the video for that extra bit of insight. While some may not like them, I find that the new maps are a lot of fun and definitely worth additions to the ladder map pool!

Masters League For Teams

In some more official news, Blizzard are¬†happy to share that they’ve been working to implement an oft-requested feature in secret; laboring over small brass pins and cogs in the humid bioluminescent mines deep beneath the Blizzard campus top-soil to bring you Master League for teams! So if you didn’t realise, Blizzard¬†have deployed a hotfix¬†to implement Master League for arranged and random 2v2, 3v3, and 4v4¬†teams. For a refresher on what the Master League is, how it functions, and what it takes to get into it, refer back to their previous post about the Master League, which you can find in the links below.¬†They also just give us a quick reminder that the Grandmaster League is coming very, very soon for 1v1 and everyone had better start preparing for that!

Speculation About BlizzCon 2011

BlizzPlanet¬†has a really interesting, if slightly far fetched¬†article up concerning all the rumors and speculation about this years¬†BlizzCon¬†event.¬†In past years, Blizzard has rented the Anaheim Convention Center to celebrate this massive convention, this year, though, strange things are happening and needless to say, people have noticed them! Firstly, I have to say, I don’t even know how these guys figure this stuff out, find it or manage to make sense if it all, it really is some crazy spy-movie-detective-investigating stuff.

Here we go, according to the Anaheim Convention Center, Blizzard has acquired the entire facility for this years event. Why is that strange? Well, for all their previous events, yes, every single one, they only rented Halls A, B, C, D, &¬†The¬†Meeting Rooms. This year, though, those are joined by Hall E and the Arena. So, BlizzPlanet asks this question: What if Blizzard are planning on announcing, or revealing a new game? I guess it really could make sense that they would need more space, especially if they wanted to dedicate an entire one of those halls to it, which, let’s face it, is the least they can do! Could it be for their Next-Gen MMO? Heart of the Swarm? Perhaps WarCraft IV? Who knows, but these conspiracy theories are always a good read and there is still a lot of time for the rumors to spread and the plot to thicken. Check the full thing out below!

Blizzard Excluded From WCG 2011?

In our second last piece of big tournament news, apparently, according to Thisisgame.com, due to the legal¬†happenings regarding Blizzard’s IP rights, BroodWar, WarCraft 3 and even StarCraft 2 might be excluded from the World Cyber Games 2011 grand finals. This is not final and there is still no official statement by the World Cyber Games but one is probably soon to be issued. I won’t go into any more detail about it here, but I just thought you guys would want to know. Read more about it below!

GSL Updates

Time for a few GSL updates! The Code-S and Code-A have both moved into their respective rounds of 16 and both are steadily progressing and both have their fair share of entertaining and saddening upsets.

First up, the Code-A. The first play-day of the Round of 16 has already been completed with HuK, Losira, Virus and  Leenock winning their games and moving on to the round of 8.

Players that made it to the Code-S Round of 16 include July and MC, both of which have already won their games in said round, NaDa, Lyn and¬†Jinro¬†also made it to the round of 16, but, sadly,¬†Jinro¬†was knocked out by HongUnPrime.¬† There are a few others that I obviously didn’t mention here, but hey, I will leave some of it for you to read.

Players that were knocked out of the Code-S, or rather down to the up/down matches thus far are the following РIdrA, by forfeit, Zenio, BoxeR, Genius, MarineKing and, even three of our former champions MVP, FruitDealer and NesTea. That is quite crazy and it is really weird to see big name players like that being knocked out this early.

As usual you can read all about the going-ons at the GSL, the results and all the drama that ensued in the links below and do remember to keep checking back here for more!

MLG – MLG Dallas

So, if you were keen to attend the event you’d better head on over to their site and get yours booked¬†and payed¬†right now.¬†(The StarCraft¬†2 Schedule has not yet been released, though.) Next up they have also released the maps they are using for the event, 7 maps will make up the map pool for the 2011 StarCraft¬†II pro circuit. Four standard maps are included, but they¬†have been slightly revised for use in the MLG competitions. Shattered Temple will replace Lost Temple, and the two other maps are ICCup¬†Testbug¬†and one of the GSL’s new maps, Crossfire SE. IEM

IEM World Championship Updates

The group stage of the Intel Extreme Masters just kicked off, a day or two ago, at CeBIT in Hannover, Germany in hall 23, for those that were wondering. Twelve players started fighting tooth and nail for the title of StarCraft II World Champion and $30,000 in prize money.

Our¬†hosts for this amazing event, Kevin ‚ÄėRotterdaM‚Äô van der Kooi, Dario ‚ÄėTheLittleOne‚Äô W√ľnsch and Sean ‚ÄėDay[9]‚Äô Plott¬†have been¬†treating us exceptionally well and keeping us more than entertained during, and between, the matches. If you want to watch the rest of the action you can check the schedule in order to attend the matches or follow the live streaming on ESL TV.

With the first couple of play-days already completed, the number of players still in contention has significantly decreased, but with that, the quality of the games has also significantly increased. First up I have to mention that there are absolutely no European or US players left in the tournament. The top 4 players, and the only ones left, are ACE, mOOnGlaDe, Moon and Squirtle. Big name such as IdrA, Socke, Fenix, qxc, SjoW and MorroW were knocked out by those top 4 and, well, that just makes the fact that they are there even more impressive.

The next few games are set to happen tomorrow and should not be missed. Check the links below for all the information you could ever need! ūüėÄ

Tasteless, Artosis & Day[9] At WCG USA 2005

Some footage recently surfaced of some of the big names in today’s StarCraft¬†II scene from back before they were in fact big names, while they were growing up, learning to be a better gamer, one step at a time. The footage is from the USA World Cyber Games 2005 where some names you may well know, Tasteless, Artosis¬†and Day[9], participated. The video is full of arrogance, drama, heartache, bitter sweetness and even a few good laughs¬†to boot. Yes, this was in fact the WCG¬†that Day[9] won. It really is amazing seeing these guys and how they were back then, which is, strikingly similar¬†to how they are today. But anyway, check the video out and big thanks to BNice for digging this up and finally uploading it to YouTube.

Cellabrella?

I absolutely had to feature this video because it may well, quite possibly be, the most brilliant thing ever. You all know Cella, formerly of clan Werra, now in clan SlayerS. And you all probably know he loves his wine, cheese and, well, singing! So here is his latest piece of work, while on air with ROOTdestiny he performs his own version of Rihanna’s Umbrella, not to be missed!

Yet another StarCraft¬†II themed song, The Nightmare Before Christmas’ – What’s This,¬†StarCraft¬†Edition. This was created by the guys from over at AKAmazingness and, well, what can I say, it’s pretty funny. It was apparently requested by Day[9] during one of his dailies and, being the keen fans that they are, they decided to whip it up. You can find the music video and .mp3 of the song in the links below.

Bronze League Hero

Did I just talk about a Starcraft II theme song? Oh, well, here’s another one and this one has slightly higher production value it seems. The song is¬†titled Bronze League Hero and¬†is amazingly well performed. It is apparently a cover of a song I’ve personally never heard before. The artist claims that this is the next Banelings and, well, it is pretty good, that much is sure, but I don’t know if it as good as Kurts¬†and Huskies Banelings. What¬†do you think? Patch 1.2.2

Starcraft II Patch 1.2.2

Another small patch hit the Battle.net servers recently, Starcraft II Patch 1.2.2. Some of you might not even have realised that this went live as it is in fact incredibly tiny. The patch only fixed a single bug that prevented players from loading in-mission campaign saves while patched at version 1.20. Sadly, as a result of this, any in-mission saves created during 1.2.1 will no longer be usable. So, if you want to read the single patch note, the one I just mentioned, you can check the links below for that. Enjoy!

Seperate Ladder For Heart of the Swarm & More

In a recent interview with games.on.net, the Starcraft II Lead Game Designer Dustin Browder revealed that the Heart of the Swarm expansion is set to have its own, separate ladder, for any players upgrading to the expansion. He does mention that although there will be a separate ladder, players will still be able to play on the Wings of Liberty ladder without having to deal with new units, balance problems or anything like that. At first a lot of people were kind of confused about this, but it is actually the way that it is usually done and it was done in the same way with games like Warcraft III. That does mean that by the time the third expansion is released we will have access, assuming we own all said expansions, to three separate ladders. Pretty expected, but still quite interesting!

In the very same interview we were treated with some information about the new maps Blizzard is currently working on for¬†ladder¬†play that will ‘hopefully’ be added in the next couple of weeks and about their new custom maps and what the community has been able to do with the Starcraft¬†II Galaxy Editor. Dustin had the following to say on the development of Blizzard DotA and what they’re trying to do with it:

¬†“We‚Äôre definitely trying to streamline it, but we‚Äôre also definitely trying to make it as competitive, or even more competitive.¬†[Than DotA-AllStars]¬†We don‚Äôt feel that complexity is a necessity for a competitive experience.”

There is most definitely a lot more to this interview than I’ve mentioned here and I gotta say that it is also most definitely a must read for any and all Starcraft II fans out there. More on the Heart of the Swarm ladder and story, more on the custom maps and more on, well, the rest of it too! Check it out below, as I mentioned, courtesy of games.on.net!

Map Marketplace – “Not Coming Soon”

In what I see as related news about something we haven’t really heard about in quite some time, ¬†it seems like the Starcraft¬†II Map Marketplace is not quite ready for public use just¬†yet. In yet another Dustin Browder interview, this one with Eurogamer, the Starcraft II Lead Designer admitted that Blizzard¬†is¬†‘struggling’ to get the Battle.net Marketplace up and running.¬†Browder had the following to say about the issues they were having with getting it up and running:

“How do players protect their own maps so they don’t get ripped off by other players? What are the rules of how much you’re allowed to charge? There’s just a ton of work for us to figure out.”

He follows this up by saying that we should not expect to start making money with our Starcraft II maps any time soon and that it is going to be ‘some distance’ before the feature is in the hands of the fans. They want us to know that they are still working hard at getting out done and dusted and just ask everyone to have a little patience. Once again, there’s more to read in the interview than just what I mentioned here, so check it out below if you care.

NASL

IdrA vs Jinro Showmatch & North American Starleague

After weeks and weeks of crazy hype and building it up, we’ve finally been treated with Geoff “iNcontroL” Robinson’s announcement of announcements, the big reveal…. that will have to wait for just a second. The showmatch¬†titled the “Clash of the Titans”¬†between Jinro¬†and IdrA, the pre-cursor to the whole thing, happened last night. To many spectators’ disappointment most of the thing seemed to be pre-recorded and, well, that didn’t go down too well. Even TotalBiscuit¬†tweeted that going with pre-recorded was not a great idea unless absolutely necessary. The games were pretty entertaining, to be sure, and Jinro managed to take them with a decent 4 to 2, scoring himself the 1500$ prize pool.

Yes, and after all of that came the main event. iNcontroL had been building up to the launch of the hotly anticipated NASL, the North American Starleague. $400,000 in prizes over the course of three seasons, fifty of the best players in the world playing in five different divisions with daily matches and 16 man LAN finals. The event will be commentated live from a full studio by iNcontroL and other rotating commentators including the likes of JP, djWHEAT and even Day[9]. iNcontroL says that this WILL and pretty much already is the biggest and bestest event outside of Korea and the GSL and he is extremely excited to finally announce it.

For all those looking to read more about the qualification process, watch it live or just stay up to date with all the NASL news out there, there’s a ton of information to be found in the links below and the whole thing is set to kick off on the 5th of April.

They mention that there will be an approximated¬†750,000 matches monthly, and those will eventually progress into a higher tier. Yes, you’ve probably guessed that this is not all for, or set up for, Starcraft II. There are even more crazy stats that you can check out below, including where they are planning on marketing their ‘product’, how many registrations they are getting and who’s funding them.

Additionally, if you care for the shorter term, you can also read about MLG Dallas, their prize pool, the rest of their stops and the dates for the event, which is in-fact starting on April 1st and carrying on till April the 3rd, below, too.

IEM World Championship & More!

In some more tournament news the ESL presented their prize pool for the Intel Extreme Masters World Championship just a day or two ago. The presented money¬†is¬†significantly lower than¬†the last seasons’ prize pool, despite including an extra game, League of Legends, as their fourth title. But yes, this¬†year StarCraft¬†2 is also¬†a new Extreme Masters title. Boasting with a $145,000 USD prize for StarCraft 2 alone, the event is one of the most¬†prize-heavy events out there at the moment.¬†

Along with all of this it seems like the IEM guys have quite a lot of great stuff set up for us for the event. Day[9], RotterdaM and TLO are set to cast the Starcraft II Tournament at the evet that will be taking place at the CeBIT expo in Hanover, Germany, from March 1st to March the 5th. Also, with the group stages already complete, you can check the Korean invites out for the IEM below, they include Moon, Squirtle, Ace and the one and only IdrA. GSL News

Time for some GSL News! With the GSL March season already underway there is quite a lot happening out there. The first few play-days have been completed and highlights include the fact that HuK won his first few games in the Code-A,  Loner is the first foreign player to be knocked out and the Code-S zerg player July managed to take down the former champ Mvp, knocking him out and down to the Up/Down matches. As a few extras, below you can also read a pretty extensive GSL March Preview, recaps of the play-days thus far, a special on TeamLiquid of HuK in the GSL and more!

Free Stream & Kelly Milkies

If you haven’t noticed, this season you can watch the GOMtv stream absolutely free from their website. (The Standard quality one, at least)¬†There are also some new casters helping out with the Code-A matches this season, namely Kelly Milkies¬†and Torch. Kelly has already done her first few sets of games with Tasteless and I gotta say I see great things for her in the future. She seems to be an extremely hard worker and I have no doubt that she will fill the huge shoes of the casting archon, Tastosis. She was recently interviewed by the guys over at ESFI¬†World and asked about the harsh criticism she has been receiving. She says she has seen some of the things¬†people have said, some of them are just overly critical and outright aggressive, while others have some criticisms that¬†she will take into regards for sure. She says that people have to try understand that she is not trying to take Tastosis away from them, they are really overworked at the moment and¬†have a lot to cast. With regards to her apparent ‘thick accent’ she said that she thinks the biggest point when it comes to having an accent, like hers, ¬†is if people are open enough to accept it. Well, you know gamers, they can be the harshest (is that even a word?)¬†people out there and most definitely quickest to judge. But, if you ask me, I think she will make it and is doing a great job thus far. So good luck Kelly Milkies¬†and I hope you survive the sometimes crazy Starcraft II fans!

If you need a link to that free GSL¬†Stream, wish to read more about Kelly’s trip to Korea, her time there thus far, what GOMtv had to say about all of it and everything else that’s even slightly related to any of this, check the links below and enjoy!

Linda ‘Pikachu’ Liao Joins Team Razer

Team Razer, following their¬†signing of BoxeR and his team, SlayerS,¬†has picked up one of the better known and no doubt the most popular female Starcraft¬†II players out there¬†at the moment, Linda ‘Pikachu’ Liao. Linda Liao (born on the 24th of May, 1981) is a celebrity model, singer and actress. This Taiwanese native came to fame through notable film performances and multiple features on well-known lifestyle magazines. Linda also has a wide range of television appearances from music videos to being a video jockey (VJ) for MTV Mandarin. Yet under all the fame and glamor of Linda lies a unique passion.

Linda Liao

Linda is not just a celebrity, off-camera she’s also a professional gamer that kicks ass. And lots of it. She¬†has been making quite a name for herself in the Starcraft¬†II scene, as I mentioned a few weeks ago by winning one of the all-female ESL Cups and managing a #1 Diamond rank back before Masters was all the rage. I gotta say, the guys and girls from¬†Team Razer¬†seem to have made quite an acquisition¬†here, yes indeed. Linda¬†really¬†fits the part and definitely¬†looks good in that¬†Razer¬†gear. If you want to read more about Linda,¬†see even more images and watch an interview she did with Razer, you can find it all in the links below

Athene is back, as we all knew he would be. This time around he is challenging all the haters out there to stop him, in whatever way you see fit, I guess, from reaching Rank 1 in Masters. He then goes on to tell everyone hating on him that all they are doing is making even more money for him. The video is, as all his others, quite hilarious and definitely worth checking out. starcraft universe

The Starcraft¬†II custom map, or mod, which was previously known as ‘World Of Starcraft’, is now branded ‘StarCraft¬†Universe’. After having been¬†flown out to the¬†Blizzard¬†Headquarters to meet with the developers of Starcraft¬†II, the mod’s creator, Ryan Winzen, is now ready to get started on the¬†crazy task of¬†turning a real-time strategy game into a massive-multiplayer online role-playing game. We were treated with a mention of some of the features being promised for Starcraft¬†Universe. It is apparently set to include the ability to save characters, customisable gear forged from loot,¬†it will have distinct player classes and up to twelve players able to join together on the same map. That sounds pretty impressive for something made in the Starcraft II Galaxy Editor. So if you want to wish the creator luck or merely read more about this massive undertaking, check the links below.

Starcraft II Sales & Lack Of Release In China

During Activision Blizzard’s financial conference call last week, Blizzard CEO Mike Morhaime¬†stated that sales of its sci-fi RTS game StarCraft¬†II are approaching 4.5 million units since its release back in July. While those numbers are pretty¬†huge for a PC exclusive game, it’s¬†actually less than some people though it would sell. A few months ago¬†Janco¬†Partners analyst Mike Hickey predicted the game would sell as much as 7 million copies by the end of Activision Blizzard current fiscal year, which ends on March 31. BigDownload¬†reports that part of the issue is that the game has yet to launch, officially, in China. During the¬†call Morhaime¬†stated that Blizzard was in fact¬†working with its partner, Netease, to launch StarCraft¬†II in¬†the country¬†but so far there’s no word on a China release date. Other smalls snippets that were mention was that¬†the game’s players have uploaded over 150,000 user-made maps to Battle.net and that¬†work continues on the next game, StarCraft¬†II: Heart of the Swarm, but that was about all we got! If you want to read all about Starcraft II’s mentions during the Activision Blizzard’s financial conference call, check the link below.

 TSL3 Zerg Invites

The guys over at TeamLiquid¬†have announced the next set of invites for their TeamLiquid¬†Starleague¬†3. After last week’s announcement of the first set of TSL3¬†Protoss¬†invites from Asia, today five Zerg players were added to the already impressive¬†list. • Greg ‘IdrA’ Fields
  • Won Ki ‘FruitDealer’ Kim
  • Jae-Duck ‘NesTea’ Lim
  • Hayder¬†‘HayprO’ Hussein
  • Jos ‘Ret’ de Kroon

TeamLiquid even have a writeup up about every one of those players, but,  I think you all know them pretty well already. NesTea – 2010’s Top Earner

In a few small GSL related pieces of news, well, at least semi-related, you can read about how NesTea is currently the highest earner in Starcraft II. The guys over at GOMtv have put together a list of the total prize money won by all the big name Starcraft II pros, in 2010 and 2011. They set them all up in a nicely ranked list and, as I said, NesTea came out on top with just over 100,000$. After that we see Fruitdealer, MC and MarineKing. What is interesting to note is that this list has all the winnings from all the tournaments, not just the GSL. The foreigner that earned the most is LiquidJinro at 9th place and at 10th we have Naama, the first one on the list that did not make most of those winnings from the GSL. So yes, the top 10 is heavily saturated with GSL participants and I guess this clearly shows that the Sony Ericsson Global Starcraft II League is the place to be for the big money. Read more and see the fully detailed list below!

Below you can find the full results of the event, photos, video interviews with most of the players and much more. This is all courtesy of Sk  Gaming and TeamLiquid. I have to add that the interviews are really great stuff. Is the Blizzard Ladder Hurting Starcraft II?
