Patch 4.1

Patch 4.1

There’s been less Patch 4.1 talk and news this week, not much less, but still not quite as much as the mountains of updates and reveals we were seeing last week. We’re about to take a look at the new updates, new items we’re set to be looting in the newly redone Zul’Gurub and Zul’Aman instances, a few new maps that were added for some older content and a few smaller extras.

Patch 4.1 Public Test Realm Notes – March 15

New patch notes have just hit the Public Test Realms with some interesting new changes. Atramedes, Nefarian, and Cho’gall all got a couple nerfs, several persistent ground effects now display different visuals for hostile and friendly players. The following spells have the same visual effects for friendly players, but new alternate visuals for hostile players: Ring of Frost, Consecration, Desecration, Wild Mushroom, Flare, Ice Trap, Power Word: Barrier, Smoke Bomb, and Hand of Gul’dan. As a general rule, the alternate effects have a red tint or hue indicating they are created by an enemy player.

And, perhaps one of the biggest, and to me weirdest changes is that Colossus Smash now ignores 50% of armor in PvP but still ignores the 100% armor in PvE. This was done after Blizzard’s developer answers said that they did not want to make two rule sets for the game, for PvE and PvP. Oh well, I guess the changes do make sense, though. You can read the full March 15 Patch notes below!

Zul’Gurub & Zul’Aman Item Lists

As you all probably know by now, due to all the talk, good and bad, the upcoming patch 4.1 marks the return of the classic Zul’Aman and Zul’Gurub raids as 5-player Heroic dungeons. These instances are set to feature item level 353 epic quality loot and, well, we’ve just been given a bit of a preview of what kind of items to expect, thanks to MMO-Champion and Wowhead. The items have apparently just shown up in the latest batch of PTR data and they’ve all been posted for our viewing pleasure! The only sad thing about all of this is that the items are not yet implemented as drops, nor do any of them have any unique models just yet. This is where everyone will start wondering what Blizzards plans are… are we just going to be seeing some recolored versions of the previous ZG and ZA items? I can think of a great many people that would have a great many complaints about that.

If you’re keen to see how beefy those items are and which of your items you’ll probably be replacing soon, check the links below! And as usual, keep checking back here soon for more! ūüėÄ

New Maps In 4.1

Next up, it seems like Patch 4.1 will add the last wave of missing dungeon maps to the game by updating all the Burning Crusade content! Yes, most TBC 5-man dungeons and raid instances now feature a shiny new map. Along with that, the latest PTR build also included the maps of Zul’Aman and Zul’Gurub and the updated map for Baradin Hold, which features a brand new boss wing. One thing to keep in mind, though, is that the next arena season is only set to start with Patch 4.2, so we probably won’t be exploring that new wing for quite some time! So if you’re keen to check those new maps out, you know exactly where to look, I gotta say, it is great seeing some of those old dungeons getting some love, let’s just hope Blizzard don’t decide to remake them, next.

Patch 4.1 Updated TBC & Zul Maps – MMO-Champion

Patch 4.1 Exras

As a few 4.1 extras you can read about how the Blood Elves and High Elves are set to unite against Zul‚ÄôAman, you can read all the complaints that players have about the recycling of content that is taking place and all the blue responses to those complaints. Zarhym replied with the following – There definitely is not a hard and fast rule about updating existing content. If we feel revamping existing content makes sense in the current state of the game and lore — and we think it will be fun — sure, it’s a possibility. You definitely shouldn’t expect this every patch though. In the grand scheme of World of Warcraft’s history, we’ve reintroduced very little existing content per patch and expansion. He also just reminded everyone that there wasn’t a singular art team working on all the Blizzard games. Diablo III and Heart of the Swarm will not slow down production on any of the World of Warcraft updates or patches. Good to hear, again! Next up, one of the latest beta builds of Patch 4.1 on PTRs added a new mount model, the Winged Lion Mount! MMO-Champion reports that we don’t have any information on this mount for the moment, and it does look like a very early version of the model but hey, it’s a lion with wings… Lastly in the 4.1 extras, you can read what Blizzard had to say about the changes made to the Ragnaros model, you know, those legs. In short we were told that the problem is we have no context or perspective on the model we’ve seen but a static image of. There’s more to it, obviously, so read all about all those extras below, if you wish.

Why GhostCrawler Stooped Posting On The Forums…

What I will call a concerned fan, or fellow World of Warcraft player, recently posted an open letter to Ghostcrawler pretty much thanking him for, during the Wrath era, giving us as the players of their most epic and intricate of games, a view into the development process and for caring enough to read, listen, and impart. Sadly for the fan, or I guess all of us, there was no response from Ghostcrawler himself, but Bashiok did step in to enlighten the masses. he basically just said that the forums have always been about players talking to players and that they don’t want to foster the expectation that everything will get a blue response if the poster tries hard enough. Bashiok says that while Ghostcrawler added a lot to the forums, the North American forums, he says that he is sure Blizzard can reach more players, especially those in all the other regions of the world, through their blog posts or concerted Q&A’s.

After that Bashiok just lists all the reasons that the blog posts actually work better, and he makes a lot of sense while doing so. (But let’s not fool ourselves, the World of Warcraft forums are never, ever and easy place to post, let alone be taken seriously!) So if you want to know why Ghostcrawler has not been quite as active on the World of Warcraft forums as he was back during Wrath of the Lich King then I guess these blue posts will be worth a read for you.

Ask The Devs

Ask the Devs – Answers #1 & Questions #2

The answers are in from Blizzard’s last installment of Ask the Devs, and a new questions thread is now available, this time around they want PvP questions. When posting your question, please keep in mind that each edition of Ask the Devs is now focused on a specific topic as noted in the thread title and, to make things that little bit easier it would probably be better just to stick to the topic. The anwsers provided to all the questions asked in the first installment of the Ask The Devs Q&A were indeed quite interesting and diverse covering everything from Updated Textures: Will We Ever Get Any? To the Northrend and Outland leveling flow, to even asking if anything was going to be done about World PvP, as many feel it is quite dead right now. Yeah, there really is a lot more than I can possibly mention here, so, if any of you are keen to read all those questions, you know where to look!

And, as I mentioned, remember to get those PvP themed questions in for the next round!

Time for a few new World of Warcraft art updates! The Blizzard Fan Art Section has been updated with a whopping ten new pieces of fan artwork set within the Warcraft universe, quite a few of which are of the always attractive Banshee Queen, so that’s a bonus. We’ve also been treated with four new official pieces in the official Wrath of the Lich King art gallery. These updates are, as usual, well worth getting, or at least looking at, in full size. Cataclysmic Changes

There has been a decent amount of news going around and it seems that Blizzard is finally back and working at Cataclysm. There was a bit of a slump around the time that Patch 4.0.1 released but now it seems like they are back, back and most definitely keen to make progress. This post was significantly spiced up by good old TotalBiscuit and his videos, so do pay him a visit over on YouTube if you get a chance! ūüėÄ

TotalHalibut – YouTube

So let’s see what’s been happening over the past few days!

Cataclysm Raid Progression

This week we’ve been shown what our raid progression should look like once we hit level 85. Blizzard have shown us pretty much exactly what we will need to get for which raids and instances, where we will get it and how long it will last. So if you want to know what item, instances or raids you should set your sights on once Cataclysm hits you can find the official announcement and details below!

Below is the basic progression map. Obviously your mileage may vary, i.e. If you’re Paragon or Premonition you will be able to skip some of the below and/or mix and match at your discretion.

  • Normal Dungeons/Crafting/Questing to get full set of 85 blues (non-heroic) to do Heroic dungeons.
  • Heroic dungeons to get full set of 85 Heroic blues to do Normal mode raids.
  • Normal raids to get full set of 85 epics (non-heroic) to do Heroic mode raids.
  • Heroic Raids to get full set of 85 Heroic epics, which will presumably help a bit on Sinestra and the next tier (when released with patch 4.1.0)

Badge vendors to help fill in gaps at all tier levels.

No real gating to speak of for ship.

Sinestra¬†opens after Cho’gall¬†is defeated on HEROIC mode. No timers or attempt limits, but she will pound you relentlessly. She has better than Heroic epic level gear (half a tier better).

The Shattering

Patch 4.0.3 / The Shattering Date

We’ve been treated, sort of at least, with a bit of information about the much-anticipated¬†Patch 4.0.3. Titled The Shattering this patch is set to¬†transform, or rather destroy,¬†the world of Azeroth, with Deathwing’s help, of course. While they don’t really give us a direct answer here they are pretty much saying the word¬†‘soon’ in every single sentence. I guess we can expect to see these events starting pretty damn soon then! Read more below. ¬†

Even though we have a set December 7 release date for Cataclysm, we still want to avoid giving out specific dates for upcoming events and patches in the event we need to shift our scheduling around at all to meet production needs.

I’ll try my best here to give you useful information without it feeling like a non-answer. ūüôā

Be patient! If you’re really hoping to roll brand new characters once the shattering of Azeroth¬†takes place, I’d strongly recommend just waiting. You’ll get a sense soon enough for how events will unfold from now until December 7. I suggest you stick to your main characters for now. Very soon the pre-Cataclysm events will begin and they’ll continually ramp up in severity and things to do over time, leading up to the shattering (patch 4.0.3a). You’re going to want to participate in these events, as they’ll only be around for a short time and will not return once Deathwing is unleashed.

[…] One thing we’ll be clarifying a bit better next week is the distinction between what is in patch 4.0.3 versus when the shattering takes place.

Patch 4.0.3 will implement virtually all of the content necessary to make the changes to Azeroth, but those changes will actually take place in patch 4.0.3a, which is scheduled to be released shortly after patch 4.0.3.

Cataclysm Build 13221

Cataclysm Beta – Build 13221

I’ve been waiting for a big cosmetic build and here it is! There were, obviously, a lot of achievement changes and additions along with the usual class changes we see every build. As usual I won’t be linking all of them here, I’ll just show those I feel are actually newsworthy. The cosmetic changes? Well the new Login screen is in the game, for starters. It’s really amazing and you can find a TotalBiscuit¬†video covering it below! The Female Worgen¬†got a bit of love in this build, too. We see the really fun looking Worgen¬†mount, Running Wild,¬†fully animated at last. Lastly the Worgen Female dance has been added and you can find videos to all of those below!

Cataclysm Beta –¬†Build 13221 – MMO-Champion

Racial Changes

  • Magic Resistance (Blood Elf) no longer reduces your chance to be hit by spells, increases your resistance to Arcane instead.
  • Shadow Resistance (Draenei) no longer reduces your chance to be hit by Shadow spells, increases your resistance to Shadow instead.
  • Frost Resistance (Dwarf) no longer reduces your chance to be hit by Frost spells, increases your resistance to Frost instead.
  • Explorer (Dwarf) no longer increases your Archaeology skills, now allows you to find additional fragments when looting archaeological finds. Still allows you to survey faster.
  • Aberration (Worgen) no longer reduces the duration of all Curses and Diseases used against you. Now increases your resistance to Nature and Shadow effects.

Female Worgen Dance

The Female Worgen¬†dance is finally available on the Cataclysm¬†beta servers¬†and is based on Poker Face¬†by Lady Gaga. Sadly there’s no Lady Gaga in the video due to copyright reasons but I am sure you can all get the idea. I have to say, though, that the quality of the dance animation is right up there with the best of them! Those Worgen bitches (You know, wolves…)¬†sure know how to move! You can find a video of the dance below, enjoy! ūüėÄ

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bYK0HCuLO2w&feature=player_embedded

Running Wild

As I mentioned above, Running Wild is now sort of fully implemented. There’s still one random arm that’s hanging below the Female Worgen as she runs, but you can get the idea! I think it’s a great idea and it really does look cool, and pretty scary, when you mount up. I’d hate to have one of those crazy things chasing me in a battleground! You can find a video of the new form below, expertly commentated by Total Biscuit.

If you missed the new login screen or Worgen Cinematics in my previous posts you can find them below too, enjoy!

Build 12759

The World of Warcraft: Cataclysm Beta Build 12759 hit the servers today and woah, what a list of changes. I am pretty overwhelmed by the list of stuff that has been change, added and fixed.

Lil’ Deathwing – Right Click to summon and dismiss Lil’ Deathwing.¬†

Who knows where this little pet will be used. My guess, and¬†I guess¬†everyone elses, would probably be that it’s coming with the World of Warcraft: Cataclysm Collectors Edition.

Glyphs – All glyphs are now found in the spellbook of each class on beta servers. Ultimately, classes will learn glyphs as “spells” and will only have to buy the glyph once to definitely learn it and swap it at any time.

Another interesting change here. I did notice the Glyphs in my spellbook but was not sure exactly what it meant. I guess this means Inscription is not going to be the go-to profession for gold anymore! But enough about that, let’s see what’s changed!

Class Changes in Build 12750

Probably the most important changes for most players, the class changes! There is a list that is too long to even try transcribe here over at MMO-Champion. I suggest you just head on over there and have a look for yourself. They always seem to be so quick with their updates! There is a huge and fully linked post here for you viewing pleasure.

New Thrall and Nemesis Models

Some new models have been added or discovered in the Cataclysm Beta. Nemesis in Mount Hyjal has received a huge makeover. I am still not quite sure what purpose he serves at the moment as I have yet to do the zone, but he looks pretty badasss nonetheless!

Thrall has also been changed in this latest build. As you can see below he has a far more shamanistic look now which has left him looking far less flashy than before. I still think it’s cool and definitely suits his current situation. He is no longer the active Warchief of the Horde.

NemesisNemesis in Mount Hyjal

New Thrall ModelThe new and slightly humble looking Thrall

Loading screens updated

The loading screens for Azeroth, Kalimdor, Outland and Northrend have been updated. You can see their updated artwork in my previous post.

Armor Specializations and Masteries available

In this build Blizzard have made Masteries and Armor Specializations available for testing. Previously we saw that armor specializations were pretty much there to attract people to their own armor type. To keep druids away from our cloth and warriors away from our leather.

The Masteries¬†are one of the things that should attract you to your talent tree of choice. You can find a full list of masteries over at this post by MMO-Champion. It’s one of the things I am most excited about in Cataclysm. I mean, how often does Blizzard change the game so drastically, how often do we get such new and interesting looking stats added to the game?

310% Speed Flying Skill

The new 310% Speed Flying Mount Skill has been added and it¬†costs 5000 gold to train, but, people who already own a 310% flying mount get it for free. All I can say is that I am jealous of those that don’t have to spend 5ooo gold on 30% movement speed.

Pet and Mount Spellbook

Mounts & Companion Pets in the spellbook

The Mounts & Companion Pets are now in the spellbook with a brand new and much improved interface. It really is such a huge improvement to be able to see the name of the mount or pet right off the bat without having to click on it first. You can see an example of the new interface above. Thanks Blizzard! I just hope the Tabard panel is coming soon too…

Relics slots have stats now

Blizzard have made quite a big change here in the form of a simplification of sorts! All the Totems, Sigils, Librams, etc have all been changed to Relics. That means all the classes that used any of the above now all use Relics. Another big part of the change is that they now also provide stats and some even have sockets! You can see¬†some examples here, via MMO-Champion, as usual. I think it’s great that the slot has that bit more versatility now and that players will actually have a bit of choice.

Character Panel Improvements

There have been a few changes that are not really documented to the character pane¬†in the Cataclysm Beta. The information that you get by holding your mouse over the stats has been vastly expanded and improved and will now show a ton more details about pretty much everything you’d want to know. It really looks like Blizzard is covering all their bases in Cataclysm. You can read more about these changes over at WoW.com.

 New Holy Power Interface

An amazing looking new user interface for the Paladin’s¬† Holy Power. You can read all about Holy Power over at MMO-Champion if you don’t know about it yet. If you have not been keeping up with the news you might have a lot to catch up on because Paladin has changed quite a lot over the past few patches. The new bar used for Holy Power looks amazing though, makes me want to play Paladin! You can see the preview for it over at MMO-Champion’s 12759 post.

New Guild Vendor Rewards

New vendors have been added in the capital cities selling really cool and interesting rewards for those lucky enough to have enough rep with their guild to purchase them! There are a few new heirlooms that are apparently useable till level 85 aswell as a really cool looking Dark Phoenix Mount and a few pets. You can find a full list of the items that are available here or over at MMO-Champion’s Build 12759 page.

Tol Barad Map

Tol Barad Open for Testing

The new PvP/Daily Quest zone, Tol¬†Barad¬†¬†is¬†now open for testing, and people are most definitely getting into it. I have only briefly stepped in there but from what I can tell it’s pure and utter madness at the moment. A few rewards have also¬†been revealed for this zone and you can find them over here¬†at MMO-Champion.¬†Does this mean the end of Wintergrasp? Yes, it probably does.

New Video Options

Video Settings Overhauled

The Video Settings menu has been expanded and most definitely improved. It looks like we will have a lot more options in Cataclysm than ever before. There are very few advanced options at the moment.  Still no built in or simplified DirectX 11 support yet, though!

Cataclysm Guild Achievements Update

A few new guild achievements have been added in this build. You can see a list of them below that¬†has been¬†provided by the guys over at World of Raids. There are some really cool looking achievements and I’ve also read that the Dark Phoenix Mount I mentioned above will most likely be linked to one of the harder guild achievements in Cataclysm. If you want more details about anything mentioned below check the post over at World of Raids out.

General

  • Guild Level 5 – Reach guild level 5.
  • It All Adds Up – Spend at least 1,000,000 gold on guildmember repairs.
  • Time To Open A Savings Account – Loot 1,000,000 gold from creatures as a guild.
  • Guild Vault (wip) – Purchased all 8 guild bank tabs.

Quests

  • Complete 50,000 quests as a guild.

Dungeons & Raids

  • We are Legendary – Obtain the following legendary weapons
  • Sulfuras, Hand of Ragnaros
  • Thunderfury, Blessed Blade of the Windseeker
  • Warglaives of Azzinoth
  • Thori’dal, the Stars’ Fury
  • Val’anyr, Hammer of Ancient Kings
  • Shadowmourne
  • Guild Classic Dungeonmaster – Complete the classic dungeon achievements listed below in a guild group.
  • Guild Deadmines – Complete the Deadmines in a guild group.
  • Professions

    • Working as a Team – Obtain 525 skill points in all professions and secondary professions.

Glory of the Cataclysm Hero / Cataclysm Raider

Here it is! The favourite / most hated achievement for many players. This will work in the same way as the one currently in Wrath of the Lich King and in the same fashion will also provide players with a really cool flying mount. See below!

  • Glory of the Cataclysm Hero – Complete every Cataclysm dungeon achievement. (Rewards: Reins of the Volcanic Stone Drake)
  • Glory of the Cataclysm Raider (Not Complete) – Complete every Cataclysm Raid achievement. (Rewards: Reins of the UNKNOWN Storm Drake)
  • Creature Damage Output Changes

Creature damage output has been increased from roughly level 65 and up. These increases scale upward with level. Creatures in exterior zones at level 80 now have 2.5 times the damage output they did previously in beta, 3.2 times at level 81, and 4 times at level 82 and up.

We’d like to get your feedback about how combat feels with creatures in level 80-85 exterior zones, including spawn rates and numbers of creatures in specific locations in each zone. Please let us know if this feels adequately challenging, or if there is a little too much face rocking going on.
    Zarhym, Blizzard Entertainment

An interesting thing to change if you ask me. I think with the amount of stamina on the gear we are picking up and getting from quests¬†in the 80+ zones it definitely won’t be a problem. Let’s see how it changes throughout the course of the beta!

    New Guild Advancement Forum

We’ve created a Guild Advancement forum to help collect discussions on this new feature coming in Cataclysm. If you have any feedback, want to discuss the guild advancement feature, or have found any issues, please do so within the new forum. Please continue to use the Bug Report forum for actual bug reports.

    New Music In The Beta

It seems like Blizzard has really added pretty much everything they possibly could have in this latest beta build. More music than could ever possibly be listened to has been found by the guys over at World of Raids and you can listen to it all, if you want!

World of Raids Beta Key Winners

I thought I would just pop this in here too seeing that the post was already so long. You can find a list of the winners below. Be sure to thank the guys from World of Raids if you won one! See the original post and answers here.

Phew. What a huge bunch of changes. I hope the summary at least helped a few of you out! I really have to thank MMO-Champion for the fast and obviously efficient coverage they do of the Cataclysm Beta. I type all of this myself and get a lot of the content myself but still have to use some of their stuff here and there! This would not be possible without them!

There were tons of changes and I really need to spend a bit of time in-game to soak it all in. I will be doing a few follow-up posts soon and I’ll update this post as best I can too! Stay tuned for more Cataclysm coverage in the coming days, weeks and months!

    Stormwind Stockade Preview: Hogger Returns

World of Raids has recently previewed the new and improved Stormwind Stockades. Blizzard has completely revamped the content within Stormwind Stockade for Cataclysm and have introduced all-new quests that are offered inside the instance. There is also a surprise appearance inside the instance by one of our old favourites from Elwyn Forest, Hogger. You absolultely have to check it out, he is definitely moving up in the world.

    The Tol’vir Race Revealed

The World of Warcraft: Cataclysm Screenshot of the Day Gallery has been updated with a new screenshot of Uldum featuring the Tol’vir race. This is the first time we see them without their armor and they do look pretty cool indeed! The visuals of the zone look amazing too.

    Camel Mounts in Cataclysm

An achievement has been dug up that confirms that we will in fact be seeing Camel Mounts in Cataclysm. See below! The chances are good that we will be obtaining these mounts somewhere within the new zone South of Tanaris, Uldum.

One Hump or Two? – Obtain a camel mount (with just one hump).
