One Million Bites

1 Million Strong On Facebook

Over one million people have “liked” the English StarCraft Facebook page! Yea, that is quite a lot and that number is steadily catching up to the Warcraft Facebook page, currently sitting on around 1.2 Million. Blizzard have had the pleasure of sharing thousands of news stories, images, and movies with a thriving Facebook community, but they tell us that they’re not done yet! To celebrate this milestone, StarCraft II Senior Art Director Samwise Didier whipped up the image seen on your screens right now!

So, to thank us for making the community as great as it is, they’ve released a new desktop wallpaper image depicting the Hyperion’s daring escape as featured in the Zero Hour mission cinematic. You can capture it for yourself in Blizzard’s wallpaper gallery, where you can find other inspiring StarCraft themed wallpapers as well.

If you aren’t already following the Blizzard games on Facebook, be sure to visit the official Warcraft, StarCraft, Diablo, and Blizzard pages for constant updates and much more! 😀

The Sacrifices StarCraft II Made In The Name of eSports

During yet another GDC Interview, which I definitely won’t complain about, Lead StarCraft II Designer Dustin Browder said that many sacrifices were made during the design and creation of StarCraft II… In the name of eSports. Apparently, when the StarCraft II team began its work on the game, it looked at its competition, namely Relic Entertainment’s Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War and Gas Powered’s Games’ Supreme Commander. Dawn of War featured four playable races to StarCraft’s three. Supreme Commander drowned the player with playable units, with more than 150 at a player’s disposal. StarCraft II would stick with the three races featured in its prequel, Zerg, Protoss and Terran – and a total of 45 units. Browder said that the reason it had less ‘perceived content’ than its competitors was because StarCraft II needed to be a sport, watchable and entertaining enough that people would want to tune in and watch other people play it competitively.

Browder said that trying to design StarCraft II’s multiplayer side was “insanely hard” and “like inventing Basketball 2” and back in 2005, both he and Blizzard Entertainment believed that “maybe, if they really hoofed it, they could ship it in 2008.” Needless to say, that didn’t happen!

So to make StarCraft II watchable and easily understood by all, it needed to be visually clear. “This is why the artists hate me,” Browder Said while showing concept art of the 300 ton Ultralisk, with a tiny Protoss Zealot to illustrate scale. He then showed the in-game Ultralisk, tiny and unimposing. Browder explained that having an Ultralisk to scale would never work. Players could hide 20 Zerglings behind a beast that size, sowing visual confusion. It really is a lot to think about and I don’t envy the designers, or artists any of it.

He finished it all off by saying that a key component in keeping StarCraft’s eSport qualities intact is skill through micromanagement and macromanagement, flanking and terrain tactics, skills other real-time strategy games tried to scrub out.

Do you think Blizzard succeeded? Do you like the visual simplicity of StarCraft II and Blizzards philosophy of ‘keep it simple but make it hard to master’, or would you prefer those sun obscuring motherships, base crushing ultralisks and titanic thors filling up your screen? Do you care about the fact that some of the units aren’t even in the multiplayer, or doesn’t that matter to you at all? Personally I am more than happy with how StarCraft II came out. I enjoyed the singleplayer immensely and, well, I think you all know that I absolutely love the multiplayer and all it entails, too.

One last GDC extra is that the Reaper is currently not where Blizzard wants it and will be addressed in Heart of the Swarm. A quote from Browder: “The Reaper not in a happy place. It was a bit of a mis-step for us. The players showed us what it was capable of and we nerfed it into obscurity. This will be addressed in Heart of the Swarm.”

That sure sounds good! Read all about everything Blizzard and all their employees had to say at the GDC about StarCraft II below.

Heart of the Swarm – 6 Months To A Year Away

If there is one thing the StarCraft players of the world know, and know well, it’s patience. Yes, we have been patiently Blizzard to give out more information regarding StarCraft II: Heart of the Swarm, the first expansion planned for the game. At GDC 2011, during a panel on the future of the strategy genre, yes, the very same one I was quoting mere minutes ago, Blizzard’s Dustin Browder gave a little more info on when Heart of the Swarm might be coming out. He stated that he expects Heart of the Swarm to be released in the “next six months to a year.” That would suggest that the game could in fact be out by the end of 2011, but it is quite unlikely. Either way, any talk about Heart of the Swarm is welcomed. Funny, though, that Blizzard seem to have quite a lot planned for the next 6 months to a year, here’s hoping nothing goes wrong!

Blizzard Playing StarCraft II At NASDAQ

In my previous posts and Pulse episodes I spoke about Blizzards 20 year anniversary and all the special stuff they released for it, including that cool Retrospective video. One thing I did not mention, however, was that the Blizzard cofounders Frank Pearce and Mike Morhaime spent some time playing a game of StarCraft II at the NASDAQ Marketsite at Times Square. Pearce and Morhaime were joined by fellow cofounder Allen Adham and Activision Blizzard COO Thomas Tipl to preside over the NASDAQ closing bell on their most special of days. So, if that is  not a big enough treat for our friends at Blizzard, they also got to play trailers for StarCraft II and World of Warcraft: Cataclysm in Times Square. Exciting stuff and definitely worth if their 20 years in the business!

Original StarCraft Reborn

A few dedicated and pretty enthusiastic StarCraft community members made a mod for StarCraft II of the original StarCraft campaign. There are, obviously, benefits in having the campaign remade in StarCraft II. Vastly improved graphics, higher resolutions and all the features of the new StarCraft II Galaxy Editor. Some changes to this campaign, which the creators see as improvements, include the addition of medics, which will definitely spice things up a little. They also added and changed a few skills, upped the difficulty a little and apparently also put a few easter eggs in there for us to find, too!

They let everyone know that they did not skip anything at all, including the original tutorial, soundtrack, voice acting, dialogue and text. Pretty crazy and, well, how can you not want to check this out?! If you are new to the StarCraft scene and want to experience the amazing story of the first game without having to endure it’s now archaic look, this one is for you. You can find a link to Starcraft: Episode I – Rebel Yell’s official page below, along with a download link!

Korean Map Pool Changes

LSPrime and JackyPrime have apparently been working with Blizzard for about a month already to add Crevasse, Tal’Darim Altar, Terminus RE to ladder map pool on the Korean servers. And now, it seems like things got a little more official, with the map changes announced on the Korean Community Forums.  The blue post linked below includes Blizzard’s thoughts on ladder map pool, but, the poster on TeamLiquid sharing this information deemed most of it ‘not worth translating’, and only gave us what we actually want to see. Here’s the short translation:

We’re going to maintain the number of ladder maps to 9 with 3 macro-oriented, 3 aggressive and 3 intermediate maps, so that a player can thumb down based on the player’s preference. GSL maps(soon) are macro-oriented.

That all sounds quite good and I really hope they think of adding these maps to the EU and North American ladders, too. Read more below!

NASL Application Videos

The North American StarLeague. Yes, it may yet be a while off but the hype and excitement continues to grow. Why, you ask? Well the most recent influx of entertainment has come in the form of all the new application videos that have been sent in from players of all shapes and sizes. Firstly, the guys from the NASL said that only ‘Teams & Players that were NOT contacted must submit a public application with all the required information.’ So yes, these are the guys that weren’t picked but want in. Some names you might know that have applied are the following:  qxc, SjoW, SelecT, Catz, PainUser, Grubby and, wait for it… Artosis and even Brother Mack, yes, they can’t possibly not accept The Brother Mack. Yeah, I don’t think anyone saw that coming. So, you can watch all the video applications these guys, and more, sent in over the past few days. Some of them are extremely entertaining and it’s great to see why some of these players feel they should be in the NASL.

I have no doubt there will be more NASL news and / or announcements soon, but, untill then, check these out and enjoy!

IEM StarCraft II World Champion Is Crowned!

The Intel Extreme Masters that took place at CeBIT in Hannover, Germany, is over and we have a champion! Twelve competitors entered the fray, fighting for the title of IEM StarCraft II World Champion and a share of $30,000 in prize money. The unforgiving early rounds eventually reduced that number to two: Jung Woo ‘Ace’ Seo and Jaeho ‘Moon’ Jang reached the Grand Final on Saturday.

Moon showed some unusual tactics during the first two matches of the final, but as the clash continued we were treated to a beautiful display of late-game prowess from both players. Ace eventually overcame his foe to win the series 3 to 2 and take home the title of IEM StarCraft II World Champion, plus, how can we forget the $13,000 first prize money?! Moon earned second place and with it $6,500, while Squirtle was able to take down mOOn-GLaDe and win $4,000 for third place.

If you want to catch up on all the action you may have missed you can find all the VODs and replays of the event over at the ESL site, check a photo gallery of the event on the official StarCraft Facebook Page or just see the full brackets and results on various other sites. As an extra you can even check an interview out with TLO from the event where he says that being a commentator isn’t all that bad and he would actually consider doing it professionally. PonyCraft II

I… Um…PonyCraft II? Yes, let  that sink in just a little bit before we continue. Firstly, the amount of My Little Pony that the creator of this would have had to watch to  create something as amazing and, um, accurate, as this, is just off the hook. That is some REAL dedication. Now, this is probably one of the best, and by far weirdest, strangest, oddest crossovers ever. You have to watch the entire thing, I can’t possibly hype it up enough. Beta Rumors

Beta Release Rumors

Ah yes, even more beta release, or reveal, rumors have been floating around recently. Sure, there’s very little reason to believe that these rumors will come true, but hey, we can dream! So a fan recently reminded us that in 2010, during Blizzards fourth quarter report, we actually had the Starcraft II beta announced. That report happened on February the 9th and as you all probably know we are currently fast approaching that date. So sure, this may well just be silly speculation, but it is fun, isn’t it? @Diablo did reply to the fans questions, quite nonchalantly, I might add, but didn’t confirm or deny anything. The guys over at Diablo INC Gamers say we shouldn’t get our hopes up at all and sadly, they’re probably right. So if you want to get sucked into all the theories, speculation and intriuge of guessing when the beta will start I guess you’d better check the posts linked below. I guess you should also just keep checking back here sometime after the 9th to see if it did or didn’t happen!

Lastly in our beta related news, another concerned fan asked @Diablo whether we would be sent an email if we were acceptted into the closed beta. @Diablo replied by saying that it is probably best to just keep an eye on all the official Blizzard sites because they will most definitely announce it there. They also just added that we should all be very weary of Diablo related scam emails.

Q: We lost you for the last few days! Are you preparing something special for us say… for the 9th? – FingolfinGR
A: Why the 9th? – Diablo

Q: Feb 9th, Blizzard 2010 4th quarter report. We are excited about it because last year Mike announced the SC2 beta. – kuangtuscw
A: Ahh, I see. Thanks for clarifying. – Diablo

Q: If someone is accepted into the closed beta will he/she find out via email? – Utjoe09z
A: When/if there is a beta you will know because we’ll announce it on our official sites. Until then be wary of scams. – Diablo

Max Schaefer Talks Torchlight, Diablo 3

Gamasutra has posted a new interview with Torchlight CEO Max Schaefer, and for those that didn’t know he was one of the original creators of Diablo I and Diablo III.  Max does mention Diablo III, and that is, obviously, the reason I mention this. He says that everyone at Runic Games is really looking forward to it and can’t wait to play it when it is finally released. (And no, that wasn’t a hidden jab at the time it is taking to release it, not as far as I know at least)

The following quote sounds like the same thing many would say: ”We kind of can’t wait for D3 to come out. It’ll delay whatever we’re working on for at least a month when it does! But at the same time we’ve just got to be doing what we’re doing,”

A big focus of the interview was, obviously, the Torchlight series of games and the progress Runic Games is making with them. If you didn’t know they are currently in the process of convering the original Torchlight and setting it up for the Xbox Live Arcade.  There is a great bunch of interesting information in the interview about how they had to pretty much re-do the entire game’s control system and interface to make it work, and feel right, on the Xbox. For us Diablo fans the interview is great for two reasons: Firstly, we are no doubt all waiting for the next installment of Torchlight and, well, playing it on our console might well be fun, too. Secondly, it is great to hear what the difficulties and problems are with making games like this for consoles because, as we all know, Diablo III is set to be released on the consoles too. So whether you’re looking forward to Torchlight on consoles, Torchlight 2 or Diablo III this read will probably get you even more excited, check it out below!

@Diablo Talks Health Globes

@Diablo answered a question last week about Health Globes. Does your entire party see it when it drops? The short answer that was pretty much already known by us, is is in fact, yes. But, Diablo INC Gamers took this as a queue to re-introduce a bit of knowledge that we’ve had for quite some time about these most vital of orbs. Get it? Bah. When picked up, health globes actually heal your entire party, their pets and I assume even henchmen. That, obviously, increases their value by quite a bit in the Battle Arena and something tells me players will be timing those spawns as accurately as they can. So if you want to read a little more about Healh Globes, check the Diablowiki page linked below or read the post over at Diablo INC Gamers.

Q: When a health globe drops, the entire party can see it, right? – AcidReign
A: Correct. And they apply to all friendly nearby people, even NPCs. – Diablo

Dyes, Items Matching & Runes

Bashiok recently spoke to a fan in quite a bit of detail about items, the way they look, the way we can customize them, sets and armor dyes. In short Bashiok told us that they don’t want players looking like clowns. Bright colors and totally random looks on gear are not part of what Diablo is. (Yes, let’s leave that to the earlier World of Warcraft expansions) He said that there may well be many colors to dye your armor but they will only change said armor in very measured and specifically tailored ways so that it doesn’t look so garish. Next up he spoke about the fact that you will never be truly unique. Sure, there is a lot of customization and there are a lot of different items, but, in the end, there will be millions of players playing the game and the chances are good that someone out there will have the same class with the same items and / or colors. That’s where dyes, and even runes come in, among other things, to visually distinguish individuals. It would be awesome to have unlimited amounts of art going in to the game, but there has to be a line somewhere. But, hopefully Blizzard can keep that line moving every once in a while though. Lastly, Bashiok was asked how runes can alter your characters appearance. Assuming you’re not standing around just admiring each other you’ll be out and about killing stuff. Since each rune alters each ability in a visual (and usually mechanical) way, even if you and another wizard look exactly alike it’s pretty unlikely you’ll have the same skills chosen, but if you do, you’re even less likely to have the same runes socketed. Good answer if you ask me and now I really can’t wait to get testing with those runes, oh my! So if you want to read those full and fairly interesting interactions, you can do so below. Enjoy!

Love is in the Air

Love Is In The Air!

Something is in the air in the major cities of Azeroth. Some call it love, and some just call it friendship and admiration. Whichever it is, many guards and townsfolk now spend their days giving and receiving tokens and gifts to other amorous citizens. The more skeptical, however, are suspicious of the strange “love sickness” clouding the hearts of so many…

There you have it, don’t miss the exciting gift exchange and worldwide popularity contest that hit Azeroth this past Sunday, love is indeed in the air! If you, as quite a few others, have been expeirencing problems while trying to those Love is in the Air achievements, running that boss or just doing the quests, well, Blizzard has answers! It seems like Deathwing did a bit of a number on the entire festival when he shattered all of Azeroth.  Blizzard Blue Poster Nephadne has offered some feedback and work-arounds for known issues affecting this year’s event! So if problems have been plaguing your experience of the world event, if you want to know what to expect, or if you want to read a quick Q&A about all these issues and workarounds, then I guess you’ll just have to check the post out below. Conquest Points – Breaking Skulls and Buying Stuff

There’s a new post up on the World of Warcraft community site called Conquest Points – Breaking Skulls and Buying Stuff and well, I guess you don’t really need me to tell you what its all about… but I will anyway. It pretty much just covers all the various ways you can earn those all important Conquest Points and, once you get them, what you can spend them on. The post goes over all of it in quite a lot of detail, even giving you things like the weekly Conquest Points Cap and how it increases with your team rating. If you’re an avid PvPer that still doesn’t quite understand the inner working or are about to hit that big 85 and just want to know what to expect then you’ll probably want to check this one out. Patch 4.0.6

Patch 4.0.6 – Coming Next week

It is beginning to look more and more like Patch 4.0.6 will be hitting the live servers during the planned maintenance this week, maybe! Yes, there is always that random chance that things may not turn out the way Blizzard planned it. Anyway, there are a lot of changes, improvements and fixes that you can brush up on in the mean time. One thing that I didn’t realise before was that it seems like Ink Traders are being added to Stormwind and Orgrimmar in 4.0.6. That is good news! So if you want to check the full patch notes out you can do that below and the patch only seems to be around 150 megs big, so that’s a plus. All Rated Battleground Weeks Now 10 v 10

Sticking with the PvP related news for a second here, Blizzard are in the process of developing a hotfix to push out before next Tuesday that will change all 15 vs 15 rated battleground weeks into 10 vs 10 weeks. Apparently after looking at participation, the 10 vs 10 rated battleground weeks have been far and away more popular than the 15 vs 15 weeks. The difference in organizational requirements as well as battleground map popularity have been a couple big factors that have led to the 10 vs 10 weeks seeing a great deal more action. So by making this change and supporting the popular option Blizzard hope to encourage even more players and teams to participate, as they won’t have to wait out every other week, or struggle to beef up to 15 players to match the requirement. Lastly, Blizzard mention that they also have plans to adapt additional battleground maps in the future to work in the 10 player bracket to increase the variety of maps available. I personally think that’s a great idea and fits in beautifully with the whole 10 man raid guild thing, too. Bigger maps working for 10 vs 10? Yes please! So if you were a little reluctant to participate in those rated battlegrounds till now, this may well be what you were waiting for. Check the official announcement below and happy PvPing!

Luck of the Draw

Luck Of The Draw Buff

Blizzard is taking yet another step towards improving the quality of random pickup groups and hopes to increase their success rate, specifically in Heroic dungeons, with their latest plan to increase the effect of the Luck of the Draw buff. In Ghostcrawlers latest blog he discusses the issues they had with the system quite indepthly. It seems like the buff, which gets applied whenever you have a random player in your Dungeon Finder group, wasn’t even working properly in Cataclysm dungeons. As you can expect this caused some of those encounters and dungeons to be harder than Blizzard first intended for pickup groups. Lucky for us that do in fact do those PUGS, this has been corrected, and the buff will now increase 5% per random player up to a maximum of a 15% increase in damage, healing and health. So while this won’t fix the fact that, well lets face it, sometimes you just get bad groups, it will indeed help out a little! As usual the blog post was ended with quite a strange line – Greg “Ghostcrawler” Street is the lead systems designer for World of Warcraft and was attacked by a coati as a child. The Guardian of Accounts Art Contest

There are many dangers threatening adventurers: deadly dragons and rampaging zerg lurk round every corner. But, not only do enemies lurk in-game threatening to cut your adventuring days short – there are those who would take away your very access to these worlds! Luckily, there are many ways to defend against these dangers, and by showing Blizzard how you protect your account you could win an iPad!

Yes, Blizzard and Apple seen to have a pretty sweet deal going. Each month, Blizzard will select two pieces of fan art which show various ways accounts or characters can be protected from danger. You might hire ogre minions to watch your back as you mine for rare gems, or you build a vast army of zealots to keep your base safe from invasion – as long as your entry shows them how your account or characters are protected, anything goes! So, dust off your sketchpad, put a fresh memory card in your camera, or get your “Print Screen” button ready and you could win! Yeah, really, any of you could win. I really like the fact that they set this competition up to cater for absolutely everyone out there, not just those with artistic talents. The full details for the competition can be found below, enjoy and good luck!

Entries may include (but are not limited to):

  • In-game screenshots from World of Warcraft or StarCraft II
  • Sketches of characters from the World of Warcraft or StarCraft Universe
  • Digital photos of real-life depictions of account or character protection
  • Dioramas
  • Statues

The sky’s the limit. Let your imagination run wild and show Blizzard creative ways your account or characters can be protected from the many dangers threatening them!

Patch 4.0.6

Public Test Realm Patch 4.0.6 Notes – Updated Jan. 28

Patch 4.0.6 that is currently being tested on the PTR is seemingly nearing completion, or is it? Well, no one is sure just yet, it seems, but more on that after we have a look at the most recent changes. The January 27th and 28th lists of changes include quite a few biggies. Mages saw quite a significant cost reduction on Fireball and Frostfirebolt, there were a few changes to the Master of Tol Barad achievement and it seems like Blizzard have started working on the balance of Tol Barad, too. Attacking forces will receive a 200% capture speed bonus when they control 2 keeps and defending forces will receive a 200% capture speed bonus when they control all 3 keeps. That’s sure to speed things up a little… Lastly, Normal PvE helms (item level 359) no longer have a chance to drop from Nefarian or Cho’gall on Heroic difficulty. Instead, the Heroic PvE helm and shoulder pieces (item level 372) only require their associated Crown/Shoulders of the Forlorn tokens to purchase, and do not require players to obtain the normal helms or shoulders first.

There are quite a few rumors floating around that we may well be seeing Patch 4.0.6 hit the live servers this week, but remember, these are still merely rumors. So if you’re interested in reading all about our chances of seeing the patch go live this week, or just the full patch notes, check the links below!

Archaeology Artifact Changes (Again)

Along with the recent changes to Patch 4.0.6 it seems like those ridiculously low, and then ridiculously high Archaeology Artifact sell values have in fact been normalized. The Word of Empress Zoe is now down to a slightly more reasonable 375 Gold and, well, most of the others have either been increased or decreased to fit a little better. Patch 4.0.3a Hotfixes

Cataclysm Hotfixes – Updated Jan. 26

Sticking with the patches and fixes for a second here, next up we have the list of Patch 4.0.3a hotfixes for the current live client. These, as usual, have a few interesting changes. Heroic set tokens have been moved to earlier bosses on 25-player Heroic difficulty (chest from Halfus, legs from Maloriak, gloves from Magmaw, helm from Nefarian, shoulder from Cho’gall). Tokens for normal versions of the helm and shoulder set pieces (item level 359) now drop from Nefarian and Cho’gall on Heroic difficulty, as they are required to purchase the Heroic helm and shoulder pieces (item level 372). An additional change to this functionality is slated for patch 4.0.6. There were a couple of Lunar Festival changes and fixes and a few class changes aswell. You can find the full list below of hotfixes below, enjoy!

Game Design Expo 2011 – Cory Stockton

The Game Design Expo 2011 was held on Saturday, January 22 at the Vancouver International Film Centre. It’s fifth annual celebration was described as the most packed schedule ever and a ticket sold-out event. Why this year, you ask? Well, among the speakers was Blizzard Entertainment Lead Content Designer Cory Stockton who closed the event with his programmed topic: THE BIG PICTURE: MACRO DESIGN IN WORLD OF WARCRAFT. In his talk Cory explained how specific software can be used to shorten the design process and catch errors before they happen. He then provided an in-depth look at how the World of Warcraft team uses macro design to shorten their design schedule, keep the big picture in mind, and pitch ideas to other members of the team. The whole thing will probably appeal to the more technical minded out there, those that are themselves looking to get into game development or the likes. So, if you’re interested at all you can check the full thing out below, courtesy of BlizzPlanet.

Corehound Pup

Core Hound Pup Adoption Campaign

Blizzard is kicking off a year-long Core Hound Pup adoption campaign and to spice it all up is giving away iPads for the best user-submitted screenshots of the Core Hound Pup in action.  Two iPads will be given away each month to two lucky screenshot submitters, so you’d best get cracking with those shots. If you’re keen to enter then you can follow the link below and head on over to the contest page to read the rule and submit your winning entry! This contest is dual purpose and I think it is an absolutely great idea by Blizzard. The Core Hound Pup is gained by adding an authenticator to protect your Battle.net account, so, everyone that actually gets one to take those screenshots with, is making life a little easier for Blizzard and reducing the chance that they get hacked by quite a huge amount. So do yourself and Blizzard a favor and spread the word about Core Hound Pups, authenticators, this contest and those beautiful iPads. Ask Creative Development – Round II

The members of Blizzard’s creative development department, headed up by Chris Metzen, are the creators, keepers, and librarians of their game lore and story. These caretakers work closely with the authors who write Blizzard’s licensed books and comics (or sometimes write ’em themselves), and collaborate with the game developers to ensure cohesive and correct use of characters and lore. Now they’re ready to once again answer your Warcraft lore questions! Yes indeed, head over to the Ask Creative Development forum post to throw your question on the pile. Blizzard do warn us that they will be using the forum voting system to help decide on which questions to answer, so, before asking your question, maybe just check the rest out and see if it has either been asked before or if any others cover what you want to know. You can, obviously, vote for the ones you like to give them a better chance at being presented to Metzen and his crew.

Blizzard Strikes At Gold Sellers Via PayPal

Blizzard Entertainment have struck back at World of Warcraft’s gold-farming black market, convincing PayPal to suspend the accounts of those using the service for gold-selling transactions. WoW Insider reports that warning letters went out this month. Blizzard’s complaint to PayPal accused gold-farmers of selling Blizzard’s intellectual property, i.e. the virtual goods. PayPal’s complied and sent notices to the gold sellers specified in Blizzard’s complaint. The accused gold farmers were given a chance to appeal PayPal’s finding by Jan. 21, otherwise they had to cease selling gold or face the suspension of their PayPal account.

Ouch, and yes, that is really, really good news. I have had just about enough of the gold farmers, and yes, I am aware that this won’t solve all the problems, but it is a step in the right direction and I’m glad to see Blizzard is actively trying to rid of those pests. In the post linked below you can find the letter from PayPal to the gold sellers courtesy of WoW Insider. It’s a great read and I will keep saying that it is in fact some really good news!

Patch 4.0.6

Patch 4.0.6 Now Available on Public Test Realms

The first World of Warcraft: Cataclysm patch of the year is in development and now available for testing on the Public Test Realms. Blizzard explains that Patch 4.0.6 is set to contain the recently discussed class balance changes, a bunch of  hotfixes that they were unable to apply via, well, hotfixes, assorted bug fixes and more! Sooo I guess if you guys and girls want to help Blizzard out with the testing of this freshly announced patch I guess you’d better get that PTR client updated! Below you can find a link to the preliminary PTR patch notes. As an added extra, for those amongst you sick to death of Cataclysm’s terrible meta-gem requirements Blizzard has made its promised changes to Chaotic and Relentless gem types in patch 4.0.6, making both require three red gems. But, that’s not all! There are also three brand new meta-gems coming with the new patch, which is good news indeed, more choices are always welcome. Keep in mind that these are, as Blizzard in fact said, not the final 4.0.6 notes, so if there is something missing that you feel really needs to be there, don’t panic just yet. Enjoy!

Patch 4.0.6 Now Available on Public Test Realms – World of Warcraft Community Site

The first World of Warcraft: Cataclysm patch of the year is in development and now available for testing on the Public Test Realms. This minor patch includes several updates that we were unable to apply via hotfixes, including the recently discussed class balance changes, assorted bug fixes, and more. If you’d like to help us test out this patch and provide feedback, you can start by copying your character over to a test realm. Once you’ve had a chance to try things out, be sure to visit our Public Test Realm forum to discuss the patch.

Below you’ll find the preliminary PTR patch notes. If you feel that we forgot certain overdue class buffs, can’t find any Tol Barad updates, or are sad because Ghostcrawler promised you a pony… don’t panic! This isn’t the final version of the 4.0.6 patch notes and our development team is hard at work on bringing these updates and more to a realm near you.

Cataclysm Hotfixes – Updated Jan. 5 & 6

The next two sets of hotfixes are here! The January 5 release gives us, once again, quite a few changes and improvements. Biggest amongst the lot, to me at least, would be the following – Heroic The Deadmines now has significantly less trash mobs, Ramkahen now has a functional mailbox and Tol Barad’s security has been beefed up a little. The January 6 fixed that pesky bridge exploit in Tol Barad. Entering Tol Barad via the bridge during an active battle by joining the queue will port the player to the correct starting place of the battle, but players who do not join the queue will be ported back to the camp, nice! There are, obviously, many, many more changes, improvements and fixes. So if you want to see that full list and read how Blizzard is making your gameplay experience all the better, you can find it below, enjoy!

Cataclysm Hotfixes – Updated Jan. 5 & 6 – World of Warcraft Community Site

Guild Flask And Couldron Fixes

Yet more hotfixes! This time around Blizzard has had a look at issues related to flask and cauldron creation for guilds. Originally, the achievements to unlock guild cauldrons and other perks required an insane amount of flask creation, around 10,000 flasks for the Mix Master achievement and around 25,000 for Better Leveling Through Chemistry. (Which awards the Big Cauldron of Battle) These two achievements requirements were lowered quite drastically to 1,000 and 3,000 respectively. I think that is a pretty reasonable change, seeing that most guilds didn’t seem to be anywhere near getting those achievements just yet. Other than those changes the amount of charges per cauldron has been increased to 20, from 17 and the time limit on them is up to 10 minutes, from 5. Blizzard also gave a quick breakdown of how cauldrons work, for those that didn’t know.

Sounds good, you can read the full announcement and explanation below.

Heroics Too Easy?

Zarhym posted recently on the World of Warcraft’s just reiterating the point that they had absolutely no intention of nerfing heroic dungeons at all. They say that they will continue to tune the trash, boss encounters and abilities, though, and that some of these changes may well involve nerfs. Lastly they just mention that they are quite happy with their decision to start with the difficulty where it was and they’re happy, overall, with the progession path they have in Cataclysm. Sooo for all those worrying about Blizzard overnerfing heroics or raids, that just won’t happen. Read the full quote below and rest easy.

I don’t believe we ever said we refuse to nerf Heroic dungeons. What we’ve been trying communicate is that it wasn’t our plan to make sweeping nerfs to Heroics within the first month of the expansion’s release. We will continue tuning dungeons, trash, boss encounters, and abilities. Some of those changes will involve nerfs. This act just shouldn’t be misconstrued as us changing our minds, or a sign that we’re unhappy with the general level of difficulty of all Heroics.

We don’t think it was a mistake to start with the difficulty we did. We’re happy overall with the progression path we have in Cataclysm. I think we’ve set an appropriate standard for this expansion, but we’ll continue fine-tuning things (nerfs and buffs) to make sure the end game feels right as time passes.

Activision Blizzard and Zynga Sued Over Alledged Patent Infringments

Word has apparently gotten out about a new lawsuit filed against Activision Blizzard and the social networking game publisher Zynga. (Farmville, Frontierville) The website TechCrunch reports that the lawsuit was filed by Walker Digital, an apparent ‘invention company, back in 2002. Walker Digital claims that Activision Blizzard and Zynga are infringing on the patent which is for ‘a method and a system for a distributed electronic tournament system …’ Lastly, they say that a number of games released by both publishers, including Call of Duty Modern Warfare 1 and 2, World of Warcraft and others infringe on said patent. Walker Digital is seeking an unspecified amount for compensation and damages. Activision Blizzard and Zynga have yet to respond to the lawsuit but I can’t help but think this one will probably not go through. I just don’t see how so many companies think they can coming out now, nearly 10 years later, asking for money. Ridiculous. Anyway, read the full story below courtesy of BigDownload.
